And now we lose Ace Frehley

#1 Post by Heavy Metal Spike »

.

I started university about a year after the 4 solo albums had been released . . . along with many MANY other albums, these kept me going despite some REAL hard times (financial and stress related).

A TOTALLY unique talent, with the CRAZIEST laugh I have EVER heard.

My fave by him . . . Fractured Mirror . . . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIi02Yx-3A8

None of us are getting any younger.

Fractured Mirror and Back in the NY Groove were the best songs to come from the solo albums.

I switched up my Halloween viewing for tonight and plan to watch Kiss Meets The Phantom in honor of Ace.

I watch the first link every year, but not the 2nd.
I also love Alice Cooper on the Muppet show.

Yeah - I never listened to KISS, but a younger "Jolson friend" of mine over on FB - who has a great voice and does an amazing Sinatra whose songs he performs live - is a HUGE Kiss fan, and has met all of the members of the band and posted the photos/videos on FB. [Especially cool was the video of him giving Gene Simmons a pin with Jiminy Cricket on it a few years ago - Gene about lost it - because that represented something very meaningful from his childhood that few people know about).

Anhyhow ... today he posted the photo of himself with Ace ... which I know was from a couple of years ago ... then I read the caption ... major bummer ... and thanks for the link to the song, Spike ... enjoyed it ...

Forgot to mention, I only managed to see him perform twice.
Once was on the Kiss reunion tour in 1996.
The other time was when Frehley's Comets opened for Alice Cooper in 1987. I was 7th row for that show, and it was a blast.

Only saw him live once - the 1980 tour noted below. Saw the rest of them a number of times though (as detailed).

1980 - the "Unmasked" tour (with Eric instead of Peter), Stafford Bingley Hall . . . with a VERY hungry UK crowd, since this was the 4th date EVER in the UK (the other 3 being during the "Destroyer" tour in 1976 - I was way too young [and broke] for that one!) and was the 1st of only 4 UK dates in 1980.

1983 the "Lick it Up" tour - again at Stafford Bingley Hall, with Vinnie instead of Ace. The 2nd of 8 dates in the UK for that tour.

1984 - the "Animalize" tour, once again at Stafford Bingley Hall, with Bruce as guitarist. The 10th of 13 dates in the UK for that tour.

1988 the "Monsters of Rock" festival at Donington Park (my "Mecca" from 1980 to 1992) as part of the "Crazy Nights" tour. Bruce was now the guitarist - not their best gig. The 2nd of 2 dates in the UK for that tour.

I lost interest in them after that.

    • The best 2 off Ace's, but the best of the 4 albums (for me) was Paul Stanley's by a MILE! . . . it really showed where the songwriting talent was in the band.

I enjoyed Aces entire solo album. I like it much more than any of the others.
Though I did love Gene's album cover the most and used to draw it all the time on folders and book covers at school.
