Pirates Ahoy!! (Lots of Pictures)

First up...the man, the legend...

Captain Jack Sparrow

Like Davy Jones, I made this custom because the NECA figures were delayed in arriving to my area, and I was eager to have some action figure incarnation of these characters. So, I went about assembling a Captain Jack Sparrow of my own. As a base, I chose a ML Gambit figure. The likeness to Johnny Depp is non-existent, but the figure's frame was slim, and I felt that the pose of the hands could work for the fey manner that characterizes Depp's performance.

Image

This is actually a revised version of this custom...when I finally did get my hands on the NECA Jack Sparrow, I changed a few details on my custom to make him closer to the source. The jacket, boot cuffs, belts, and straps are all leather. The vest and pants are fabric. The various buckles are vinyl.

Image

The dreadlocks are from a Shadowrun figure...I basically just sliced the top of the hair piece off, fitted it to Gambit's head, and sculpted the do-rag edge and hat over top of it with epoxy putty. The beard braids are cotton-covered wire blended into an epoxy putty beard. The feet are from a ML Bullseye.

Image

I think the second belt is an addition to his outfit for the second film, because the initial references I used only had him wearing one belt (as far as I could tell anyway).

Image

The sword was made using the blade from some crappy Wolverine figure's three-pronged ninja sword. I made the handle by wrapping leather around the blade, and the hilt/hand guard was made using plastic from an epoxy putty tube. The rum bottle is epoxy putty built up around a miscellaneous piece of plastic that served as the bottle neck. I painted it varying layers of silver, copper, and gold, and then coated it in Tamiya Clear Gloss...I was attempting to give the illusion of semi-transparent glass.

Here he is facing off against Maccus:

And here he is beside the rather impressive NECA Jack Sparrow:

Next...the devil of the sea...

Davy Jones
Image

I was caught off guard by how much I enjoyed Dead Man's Chest. I thought the first film was overrated, but when the sequel finished, I realized that I hadn't had that much fun at the movies in a long time. And a big part of what I liked about the movie was Bill Nighy and ILM's creation of Davy Jones.

ImageImage

The base figure is the SMC series 2 Daredevil. The left foot is from Samurai Spawn. The face, hat, barnacle growth, lobster claw, right hand, and peg leg are epoxy putty. The tentacles are trimmed from a ML Blackheart figure, since I wanted to preserve as much neck articulation as possible. The major thing that I discovered with this custom is that epoxy putty adheres quite well to certain fabrics, which was quite helpful in sculpting the barnacled detailing on the legs, jacket, and leather overcoat.

ImageImage

I used a still image of Davy's head from the film, a conceptual drawing from the official website for the movie, and referred to pictures of the NECA figure to get a sense of the color scheme.

ImageImage

Davy's not really an action-oriented villain, but he's expressive in his movements. So, while he's not quite as limber as most Marvel Legends, the articulation I was able to maintain from the Daredevil base figure would allow for some theatricality. Also, I made sure that the sword (from a Chronicles of Narnia Peter figure) was removable...who knows what lies in store for Davy At Wolrd's End ;)

ImageImage

The head sculpt was a lot of fun. There are a few things that I loved about the design from the movie. First is the bulge at the back of the head, resembling an air sack or the thin flesh of an octopus head. The second is the little "vent" on the left side of Davy's face, jutting out, blowing smoke, or just expressively twitching. The third is Bill Nighy's piercing blue eyes...the real heart of the character's face and general effectiveness as a character. The fact that the actor's eyes are real is an anchor for the whole effect. If they would have just used his voice and simulated the eyes, I think the character would be far less convincing. Also, the need to curl some of the tentacles turned out to be (for me) an essential change to the Work in Progress.

Image

The sculpting of the barnacles, conches, and overall reef-like growth was fun. I pretty much just tried to suggest the effect, since I was uanable to find a solid and consistent reference for the exact details. He may be a little light on the growth, but I was satisfied with the effect.

The most recognizable of the Dutchman's cursed crew...

Maccus
Image

The design for Maccus is something so silly, and yet so cool. He was prominently featured in the trailers for Dead Man's Chest, and he caught my eye immediately. So, since I was making some pirates, I figured I'd give him a superposeable try.

ImageImage

The base figure is yet another SMC series 2 Daredevil. The shins and feet are from the movie Daredevil. The hands are from some Dark Alliance figure (the creepy woman in the green dress). The body was heavily resculpted from head to toe using epoxy putty and a bit of fabric.

ImageImage

This was a time consuming piece that I've been picking at since I finished Jack. I sculpted the growths in sections, and tried to make the texture of the figure more interesting by varying the colors all over the body, while still giving a greyish overtone.

Image

I want to make more Dutchman crewmembers, but am having a hell of a time finding reference material. Any suggestions?

Let me know what you think, and thanks for looking.

The Twins
Image

Here's where I started:
Image

Here's the first stage of sculpting, plus the heads that I was to sculpt over:
Image

And here's the final custom:
Image

This custom was VERY time consuming...and I had to work in short increments due to the somewhat insane schedule I've had as of late, so the process was drawn out considerably. The base figures are ML Hawkeye and Angel...all I did was remove the limbs required to squeeze the two figures together, sculpted over them with epoxy putty, and added the appropriate cloth garnishes.

ImageImage

The back was my way of working around Angel's wing attachment thing...I slapped on the head of a Spawn monster, and tried to make it look like the decorative piece of a ship...a little strange perhaps, but it was fun.

Image

I was concerned that the eyes might look a little too googly and cartoonish, but they're growing on me.

Image

Here's another Dutchman fella:
Image

Much less labor intensive, but fun nonetheless. This custom uses an Angel figure as well...all I did was sculpt where necessary and add the clothing. The ball and chain sets are chains from a Wolverine Ninja figure with epoxy putty balls.

Image

I have no idea what the character's name is, but I clearly remember him from the film. I thought about making him with his mouth open in a wide smile (which is how I remember him) but I couldn't find any reference for that.

The crew thus far:

:bshock: I am totally blown away...... :D

That is some OUSTANDING work you have done there.

All the figures look great, especially THE TWINS. What you started with and endded up with is incredible.

It seems customizing figures is becoming very popular these days.

Again, SPECTACULAR job, love em' all....

Thanks for the very kind feedback, everyone.

Pirates 2 was probably one of the most visually inventive films I've seen in a while...its been some time since the conceptual designs from a film have had me this jazzed...It's very much appreciated that you fellas got a kick out of these customs...I know I had a bundle of fun putting them together.
