I'm also on board with an
Alien sequel that forgets everything after
Aliens. HATED
Alien 3 so much it still casts an evil shadow over everything that followed.
It's unusual for us to disagree about something (hey it had to happen
eventually
)
(* you are still on the Christmas card list though *)
Alien3 is actually my fave out of ALL movies the beasties are involved in. Neither the wee Wifey or I were impressed when we originally saw it (it was SO different that what was expected after "ALIENS", and no-one wanted Hicks & Newt to
die!
)
It grew on me with subsequent watchings, but what REALLY sold it to me was the exclusive/directors/whatever cut that includes the extra cut scenes, fleshing out a lot of the character decisions and generally providing more background. The latest super-duper version has taken
THAT version even further by cleaning up the visuals and applying an overdubbed/restored soundtrack & dialogue. Absolutely
amazing film. The cast is perfect too (with Charles Dance getting prime recognition). Probably my fave design of the creature too (although love the Alien Resurrection design also).
So I personally would NOT want that rewritten in any shape or form.
As regards the B-movies though - I totally agree with your observations, historical examples and suggestion.
.
I love ALL of Sigourney Weaver's "Alien:" movies, but, after the first one, my favorite is "Alien Resurrection" because - well, truth be told, I find the "sexy vibe" of the buffed bad-ass Ripley-clone to be "off-the-charts".
(But that's just me. You are free to have a different opinion.
)

Given your somewhat dark sensibilities Spike this is unsurprising.

I started this about
Alien 3 but I actually quite like the movie though I now wish a new fork were created after
Aliens, something Sigourney Weaver, Neill Blomkamp and James Carmeron have worked on. For me it's more about that killing off Newt, Hicks and Ripley proved to be a really unproductive direction and as Todd pointed out 3 "cast a dark shadow" over subsequent films leading to travesties like the follow up
Alien Resurrection (sorry Vlad!). None of the following films have been much chop and while I'm hoping the upcoming
Alien Romulus might be better, experience has taught me not to hold my breath.
Aliens is among the best sequels ever made and it seemed mean-spirited to kill off characters that so much effort went into. I know that tragic events of this sort happen in real life but I go to movies to get away from real life. I and millions of others enjoyed the military SF approach of Cameron's and interestingly much of the book, RPG and fan films have taken
Aliens as their root and inspiration. So, I'm happy for 3 to exist but would like to see an alternate timeline created from
Aliens in the same way other franchises have done.

Squiddy - no offense taken.

Personally, I have found all of the post Resurrection alien movies to be utter unadulterated dreck.
The one that takes place on the alien home world after the Lawrence of Arabia clone nukes it with aliens has got to be the worst film that I have ever seen. In fact, if you would ask which movie do I wish that I had never seen in my entire life that one would be without equal.

Agreed. 'Alien Covenant'? Awful. Heretically, along with James Cameron, I've a soft spot for 'Alien Vs Predator'. Time to for this meme again:

I enjoyed the whole Quadrilogy of the original Aliens series. Nothing beats the first two but I equally liked the last two. Watching the super specials made the last two movies way better IMO.
I watched Without Warning the other day again. I enjoy the movie but it can use a little more action. Remake with practical effects and up the creepy factor would make it even better. You would be hard pressed to find anyone to top Palance and Laundau though.

Yeah - that's me alright - always the "glass half empty" fella
Having originally identified
"Rawhead Rex" and
"Pumpkinhead", I thought of another one I'd like to get a modern revamp - via a CONTINUATION to the story . . . 1997's
"The Relic" - loved the atmosphere, the plot, and (of course) the "Kothoga" beastie.

Spike, you are anything but a "glass half empty" fella. Apologies if I gave that impression.

I enjoyed
Pumpkinhead, particularly the creature design and couldn't agree more in regards
The Relic. I like the leads Tom Sizemore and Penelope Ann Miller and the Kothoga is a great, formidable monster. A fun monster movie watch that I've seen more times than I should. Unfortunately, I have not seen
Rawhead Rex but given your other recommendations I think I should.
I wished they had done a better job on
The Sphere and likewise, the recent
Underwater.

It's well dodgy . . . especially the creature design/costume & effects . . . but if you go into it thinking of a slightly more gory/adult version of 50's B-movies, you'll do alright. I've read the graphic novel and it's pretty similar in plot to THAT, and I think the GN is supposed to follow the original story fairly closely (but not sure). GN is MUCH more gory though (a product of its time & audience) and has a seriously deranged creature design that (apparently) looks closer to the description in the original book. A quick bit of "pictorial-google-foo" will show you the designs.

Being a child of the 50's, none of that seems an impediment to my enjoyment. Anyhow recently I've been going in on folk monster horror
The Ritual,
Antlers,
The Hallows etc., so fits right in. I've read Clive Barker has tried to generate interest in a remake.
Inexplicably I've confused
RR with
Horror Express, another one I haven't seen.

"The Ritual" creeped me out, and although I enjoyed it, haven't been able to bring myself to watch it again.
"Antlers" ditto, but didn't creep me out quite as much. Not seen
"The Hallows" or
"Horror Express".
I got half-way through
"Rawhead Rex" again - and the way the movie is done it's more like a "creature feature" than a horror. The GN is MUCH more nasty though. Having thought about it, I'm not sure a modern take would be something I'd enjoy . . . I'm more about the beasties / Sci-Fi / action than I am about "horror". Another example that emphasises this is 2007's
"The Mist" - I was uncomfortable with the psychological aspects and the intensity/hopelessness of the situation, while being fascinated (and scared silly) by the creatures - I've watched that twice (a LONG time ago), but since then, haven't been able to watch
THAT again either

Okay Spike, you have to fess up now, what is this "GN" you keep talking about? I'm curious.

It means Gynecologist.
I love Horror Express. One of the few movies where Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing get to work together (plot wise) instead of as enemies.

Spike, it seems our sensibilities are very much in alignment. That it's "more about the beasties / Sci-Fi / action than I am about "horror"" is absolutely true for me. And yes,
The Mist is a great example, which I have watched again recently. I liked the creatures but found the bleakness, particularly in the ending, less enjoyable. And yes, I understand life can be bleak and tragic (and like most, my own has had these elements) but it's not necessarily what I seek in a movie.
I would welcome a remake of the Hammer films
The Gorgon and
The Abominable Snowman and it sounds like
Horror Express might also be worthy. While on Hammer how about some new adventures of Bernard Quatermass? Or did
The X-Files overplough this territory?

Clever clogs.
