Kaiyodo's 1985 Godzilla vs King Ghidrah-progress update

#1 Post by monsterjones »

Obtaining old Japanese Godzilla kits is not the easiest thing these days, but thanks to eBay
they show up every now and then, when a collector decides to sell off some of the sacred
stash.
I happened to know this collector, I used to build for him, he's on our CH...ToyVet....great guy too.....(and a Veterinarian) . Kaiyodo's 1985 Godzilla vs Ghidrah sculpted by Eito Hara is not the same quality we get from producers of Godzilla models today. It is the EARLY days of Garage kits, "when pickins were very slim, Hoss!"
You know that funky old tan resin of old kits... slightly waxy, pin holes, kinda brittle. ..but I LOVE this old stuff..(like ripping the shrink wrap and opening an old Aurora kit)...!

This kit has the tan and pink resin . Also, it is kinda small, 1/350 scale....Godzilla is about 6" tall.....but Ghidrah kits can get really big with the wings, so I am okay with scale.
I have done a few Hara kits and his sculpting likeness of Kaiju is very good....kinda like the Billiken kits.
These early garage kits are fragile too, lots of little, I mean little fragile, ....teeth, claws and wing tips that break in the box over time, just from being moved around and shipped half way around the world!

The model was just shipped to me, it is in transit, and I thought I would create a thread
to show the progress as it gets built.
Here is the auction:

Congrats.
I was watching that auction, and thought about bidding, but things got hectic and I never got to it.

Glad to see it find a good home, and someone who intends to actually build it.

Good luck with that one - Those are definitely a nightmare compared to today's kits.

Good luck too Bill. I love these early Kaiyodo pieces, but invariably all the teeth are missing from these guys. Forces one to be an amateur Dentist. Let us all see what you do with it.

Thanks

07/26 UPDATE:

Kit washed and ready to assemble.....Gregg was right, needs lots of work....wings cast thin
,lots of parts like horns, fins broken off....I understand tho...casting and engineering a kit for sale
was very primal in 1985...early garage daze for sure.

Image

Got a good assembly part one lick....I'll need to add lots of little parts, horns, fins...etc oiy vey!

Looks good so far - Looks like a huge seam down the side of Ghidorah.

I remember the first time I got one of the old Kaiyodo kits back in the 80's - Rodan 68 from Destroy all Monsters - no chest spikes, claws or head horns - you had to make them all.

Looks great Bill, the base alone is killer. You're a better man than me to tackle this kit.

You've got a real piece of Garage kit history there, Bill!

It's nice to see it found a good home.
I'm looking forward to more progress pics, and the finished product.

Looking good! I've always thought the Godzilla in that set was a really good sculpt, especially for an early garage kit.

Looks like pure fun to me. I think you did very well for yourself and this is what you love mostly about garage kits: the search and acquisiton of something rare in a genre you love.
