1/9 Groot and Rocket Raccoon by Dragon COMPLETE pics p3

#1 Post by Hunter Rose »

My friend that runs a comic book chain often asks me to do display models of kits he buys in, and he's asked me to do one of these. And even though I'm working on another diorama, and I never work on multiple projects, I jumped at the chance to make this kit and I'm stoked about doing it!

Image

I'm hoping this should be a quick build as its OOB so pretty much just a paint job thanks to Dragons excellent tidy break down of the bits. I'll start with rocket, so for now I've got him primed ready to start painting when its dry.

Thanks for looking, more soon :D

Thanks for posting. What kind of primer did you use? I went with the Vallejo primer on my vinyl kits, but I'd love to use a rattle can.

Its funny I too used to use the vallejo primer, now I use Halfords grey primer out of a rattle can, its a great primer and its so much easier using a rattle can

Sorry about the lack of progress on this build, my airbrush compressor has gone kaput, waiting on a new one

Before it died I managed to get a white undercoat onto rockets outfit and spray the orange base colour

And get the brown base coat on his fur

With any luck my compressor should be with me on Monday so I can make further progress.

Thanks for looking, more soon :D

Nothing fancy just a standard AB one, its really cool though its one with an air tank so its a step up from little put-put diaphragm one!

I do not work with an Airbrush (thought it would not come in handy with my 54mm figures), but now I have to think into another direction. We will see (today I made some kind of inspection on all my stuff I have on the bench and which is in different stages of work, hell, before tackling something new I have to finish sooooo much, argh  !)

Well if you feel like using one, go for it, and dont be daunted. I was strictly brush for a long time and when I tried an airbrush I was amazed how straight forward it was and wished I'd done it sooner.

Okay so new compressor is up and running and I also have a new airbrush so no excuses for dragging my feet now :D

Started off by mixing up an of white with white vallejo and a drip of khaki brown

Image

Then sprayed his face for the light/white hair of the face and tips of ears

Image

Image

Image

I then added some patches over the tail and over hands feet, and tops of arms and legs

Image

Image

Image

And then I mixed up some black with some umber in so it wasnt totally black, and sprayed the dark patches on the face

Image

And some stripes over the back of the head and tips of back of ears

Image

And on the tail and limbs

Image

Image

Image

Over all I'm pretty happy with how its looking, the dark patches on the face encroached a bit too much into the white cheek hair but thats fine, I'll dry brush that back and the dark will act as shadow.

Next up I'll tidy up the face, and add some details to it like eyes and nose, want to get the inner mouth bits painted too so I can glue on the bottom jaw asap as I'm sure I'm going to lose it soon its so small!

Thanks for looking, more soon :D

Thanks Frank!

Carried on with Rockets face using a wet pallet of vallejo acrylics, which I used to highlight the white crest (white with a touch of ochre) and neaten up the white over-spray with mud brown (which was the base colour I airbrushed on) mixing various shades with some khaki brown and burnt umber, and a touch of black.

Image

Image

Image

I've got renewed faith in my steady hand after tackling the eyes!

Added some red to my pallet and did the upper mouth, and the tounge, and again neatened up the dark gumline and highlighted the teeth with more off white.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Couldn't resist ca gluing the bottom jaw in place even though the paint wasn't 100% dry!

Image

Image

Only things left to do is add a little white dot to the pupils, and there needs to be a brown patch going from the nose up between the eyes to break up the white. And there is a gap where the jaw meets the face which I'll fill with some of the mud brown paint bulked out with matte medium.

I have to say I'm not usually one for figure painting like this, especially with acrylics (I'm usually an enamel man) but I'm so stoked with how the face is going, its above and beyond what I thought it would be and am very proud of it, now I just hope the rest of him goes so well!

No acrylic painter? Enamel Man? Rethink! You work incredibly good in acryl and I see a complete new way to do a painting job like this. I paint only by brush but this here wets my appetite to try out airbrush painting, too! Btw Mate, the eyes are ROCKING!!

Thanks Frank! Yeah will definitely not be neglecting my acrylics so much when brush painting now.

Just a quick update to show more work on the face, I've filled the gap where the jaw meets the face, like I said earlier I mixed up some brown with some matte medium to bulk it out

Image

Image

Image

Once its fully dry I'll blend it in more with the surrounding shades of brown. Next I worked on the face itself some more, painted the brown patch going from his nose up between his eyes, and some more detail on his muzzle.
Also used the point of a cocktail stick dipped in a little white paint to add a catchlight in the eyes, to accentuate the effect a little more I also lightened the lower lid very slightly with some african earth pigment.

Image

Only thing left to finish off the head, will be blending in the filled jaw portion, and then brushing over some clear gloss on the nose and eyes to add shine.
