Polar Lights' Kane

#1 Post by Ant »

Made an honest start on this yesterday after fiddling around planning the lighting.

I'm using 1206 size SMD LEDs with an 0805 resistor soldered on the back, and then soldered on to some wire-wrap wire - not the easiest task, particularly with my eyesight :(

Image

So far I've got the headlamp in and the switch units on the back. Inner status panel is still in progress..

Lovely kit, but not much room to manoeuver!

Bit more progress this morning.

Status panel painted.

Image

Lighting rig for the status panel - two LED assemblies mounted on the same wires. These fit into recesses cut out of the back of panel.

Image

Image

Backpack switch block.

Image

A channel was cut out of the back of the block and filled with clear epoxy mixed with a speck of white acrylic to help diffuse the light a bit.

Image

Another channel was cut in the recess in the backpack and 2 more LEDs inserted. A third will be added for the other switch on the right.

Image

And another channel on the inside of the backpack to allow the wires to be routed round to the other side...

Ant, your kit progress looks great, but I am really in awe of your skill with the soldering iron!

Should be effective when you're done. Ref the little epoxy panels you did, are they a success? I'm not sure where they are in the latest pics.

Ant, this is way cool! A big Kane kit with interior design, lightning and some super detailing, great! Do you have some pics about the rest of the kit? And is it recommended? I have the pewter Kane from Andrea in 54mm, and it is good, too, but seeing the possibilities with this dude here, hell, could be the joy of a ride!

I am in here and watch with big interest how you proceed and for the egg and Base!

Backpack done - Dave, the block with the tinted epoxy is in this part. Frank - yes, it's a great kit - I'm building this on a schedule & don't have time to detail the whole thing, but there are others if you google around, including this thread here http://theclubhouse1.net/phpBB3/viewtop ... 1&t=105271
Other Dave - cheers! Aiming for the Nationals...

Great work Ant. Could you explain more on the LEds and the resistors. I've read the Sci-fi modeller article which is great for the layout info but dosn't give much on the small leds or resistors

The LEDs are 1206 size surface mount devices - i.e. they are designed to be soldered directly onto a PCB, rather than have wires attached, which is what makes this so fiddly. The resistors are even smaller and soldered on the back of the LED in a sort of sandwich.. I'll have to try and draw a sketch cos it's too small to photo with my camera..

Here's a quick sketch I did over lunch - if you google 1206 led you'll get loads of info on the actual things. The resistor is soldered to one end on the underside. Then the wires are soldered one to the free end of the led and one to the free end of the resistor.

Ant, correct me if I'm wrong, but... you have the GROUND wire going to the resistor?

It doesn't matter which side of the diode the resistor is, it only matters that the current goes through the diode the right way.
So

is the same as

if you'll excuse my ASCII!

Finished the torch tonight - this uses a PLCC-2 sized LED which is another surface mount type, but bigger than the last at about 4mm x 4mm. Same trick with a resistor soldered on the back and the wires soldered on.
A hole was drilled along the length of the torch through the middle of the back section (which is below the centre of the lamp section, deep enough to almost reach the mounting lug on the bottom of the torch. Another hole was drilled up from the underside to intersect with the other hole. The wires were then threaded in from the front of the torch down to the end and then carefully pulled through and out of the bottom with some very fine pointed tweezers.

I made a small reflector dish painted in Alclad Chrome that sits over the LED and inside the clear torch lens to help spread the light.
