Any remakes you would like?

#1 Post by Frank-Holger »

Sometimes I sat down and start my brain cells to think about some remakes I would like to see. Lets set aside our thinking about good or bad they might be or if there is a need to it, just for the fun. I would love to see some stuff because of the Special Effects they can create now and which might look good (do not skin me alive because I might slaughter some holy cows! Remember, it is just for the fun of it!)

-Them! I would love to see how they design the ants and animates them. And would love to see the Queen Flight, the Marines storming the Hive in the canalization, what action scenes could be done! But I guess, they would never recreate the atmosphere of the desert scenes with this weird, creepy noise!

-The Black Scorpion. Again, the creature design of the beasts and first of all, the underground cave action with all those monsters. Must be cool to watch!

-Anyone remember the horror flick THE STUFF?? This would come in creepy and horrible when redone I guess.

-The Monster that challenged the world and other 50ties and 60ties monster stuff, even a LAND UNKNOWN could be a great idea with top notch FX!

But on the other hand, we have remakes today which are ridiculous, and even all the state of the art FX could not save the day, so... original ideas were and are the salt in the soup of filmmaking.

Honestly, I don't want to see any of the old giant critter movies redone.
Part of their charm is the era in which they were made.

That said, there are a few movies I'd like to see them take another stab at.

Dune
They still haven't gotten this one right. The movie was fun, but a bit of a mess.
The TV miniseries had horrible, stiff, wooden 'acting' and really no character charm whatsoever.

Conan
The first movie was pretty good, but didn't really capture the character correctly.
The recent movie, with Momoa had the character pretty well, but the story itself was meh.
I want to see a truly great adaptation of one of the REH stories. Treasure of Tranicos, Red Nails, or Queen of the Black Coast.

It
The mini series was ok. The clown was great, but the other characters - meh.
I'd love to see this as a full on feature film.

1. LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT (WITH ORIGINAL CHANEY MAKE-UP)
2. SALEM'S LOT
3. WHITE ZOMBIE
The question is not so much where we are as when we are.

Highlander, one of my favorite but flawed flicks, Batman I know everybody loves the last go round but I am still waiting on the dark, gothic, dark knight I love.

Modeljunky, HOWARD THE DUCK would be ultracool! But when, PLEASE the Duck as it is seen in the comics and not the way George Lucas did it. Story was so lala, but okay on a level, but the Howard Design left too much, it was too childish!

Loborex, really, HIGHLANDER? I have never thought of redoing this movie because it is an "instant classic" and was way ahead for its time. Interesting to know which actor you would like to see as Connor, Ramirez and the Kurgan of cause! And a new BATMAN? I think, they will have one with Ben Affleck next year. The trailer looked promising in my eyes.

Joe, I am with you with SALEM´S LOT, deffinitly! I have seen some versions but none of them was as satisfying as it could be!

Tay, I am with you with DUNE (but I love the Lynch movie a lot! It has a special feeling and every time, I see it, there are new details visible for me! IT... I meant to have read they will do a remake big scale of the King Story, so I stay tuned. The old TV version was not bad, but the ending with this Spider Thing was horrible in every negative aspect of it (my opinion). And for CONAN... The Momoa Conan looks physically really "real" as Arnold did in the 80ties. Both represent a Conan which was shown in the comics, but the stories weren´t the way I would like to see them. A combination of two or three original Howard stories would be THE DEAL...

John Woo´s THE KILLER could be a cool remake, too!

Michael Fassbender would make a great Connor MacLeod. Maybe the guy who plays the "Hound" on Game of Thrones could be the Kurgan. Ramirez maybe Russell Crowe or Liam Neeson, that's going to be a tough one to pick.

Yes. "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit", the way Tolkien wrote the stories.

I read the books when I was a kid (late 70s) and I have always wanted to see someone film them, so it was exciting when Peter Jackson took up the challenge.

Jackson's TLOTR trilogy started out great, but by the time he got to "Return of the King" I was disappointed with changes he made. Denethor doesn't leap to his death, and I really missed "The Scouring of the Shire". It's important for the story, to show how the characters have grown as a result of their adventures.

And for "The Hobbit", fageddabowdt! He took an enjoyable little story that you can read in a long afternoon, and turned into a 10+ hour fantasy video game. I almost walked out of the first "installment", I was so disappointed, and I have refused to see the other parts.

Maybe "Jurassic Park", too. I think Spielberg ruined the story. Hammond should get eaten and pay for his arrogant folly.

"Midway", too, needs to be remade. Or rather, someone needs to make a proper movie about the battle, without all the fictional crap that was in the original, and taking advantage of today's technology to present the ships and aircraft that are no longer around. The actual story of the battle is full of exciting and moving examples of bravery and heroism, on both sides, that we don't need a fictional son dating a Nisei chick.

Other than that, I'm not a big fan of remaking movies.

I love highlander but the special effects are awful and I always hated the ending. If they ever redo it should use some of the tv shows plot points like the watchers and the fact that their are more than a handfull of immortals. Have not really thought about casting. As far as bats vs supes not really looking forward to it might be fun but I'd rather see a dark gothic tale with a villian like manbat or killer croc.

If Them! was remade, I agree that the effects could indeed be completely convincing...but it would have to not lose sight of the suspense that makes the original a ScFi classic. Also keeping the time period would be a huge plus.

Salem's Lot was indeed a good choice, as I fully agree that neither version gets the mood of King's book. I think I read it six times within the two years following it's first printing. I did like the casting of James Mason as Straker, but it just retained to much of a TV movie vibe. While Reggie Nadler was cool as a Nosferatu-esk Barlow, the character was far removed from what King intended. There's a vibe in the book of palpable corruption in the Marsdan house that you can almost smell thru King's writing. He also ties you very closely to the season, time of day/night and the hidden secrets of the town. It would take a director with a great ability to convey atmosphere.

Invasion Of The Saucermen
Attack Of The Giant Leeches
Monster Of Piedras Blancas

Note: I hope on one ever remakes the Creature From The Black Lagoon. IMO, this one needs to remain the classic it is!

I'd have to say Fantastic Voyage; the effects in the original are seriously dated, and the whole thing could be brought up to 21st century movie standards.

Which one? or all 3?
Personally, I am looking forward to the 2 Godzilla films. I have no opinions or desire to see a Kong movie though.

Harhar, THE CREATURE OF THE BLACK LAGOON was one movie I have forgotten to list  ! Remember, Universal wanted to do it way back in the past, Jack Arnold was in to direct and the Creature FX should be handled by Rick Baker, but to which circumstances I have never read anywhere, the project fails. Interesting, that most of the old stuff was done again and again (Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy) but the Creature left untouched. This is a bit strange, but on the other hand I think, would it do a good box office??? Today? And what rating should be aimed at? PG (the most big money PG flicks got lost on the box office, like ROBOCOP remake, TOTAL RECALL remake and all the movies they trimmed down to get the youngsters in). I really think, WHEN they would redo THE CREATURE, there is no need for stomach ripping and brain eating. You can create a real sinister atmoshphere in the jungle, make it weird and full of suspense to attract the audience!

I totally agree with LOGANS RUN! I have read the book and found it much more entertaining then the film (and with todays FX standarts, it could be done really well!). FANTASTIC VOYAGE might be a big scale movie. Imagine all the body defense action again the sub, wow, there could be done a real FX extravaganza!

To keep the time period of THEM! the same is a real cool idea! I saw every time modern soldiers fighting against the ants (could be interesting to design some mutant insects because of the radiation, but they should let it be as close to the original as possbible. To create this atmosphere, this would be the a and o of the story. THEM! is one, if not, the best movie of this theme of all times. And a last point, remember the movie ARAC ATTACK, which had very good spiders but failed totally compared to TARANTULA!

Great discussion here, guys!

That was a very interesting link. Legendary's plans to create its own niche of giant monster films, similar to the now well established superhero genre, has potential. There will be varying degrees of success but at least the great monsters will have another chance to grace the big screen, and connect with new generations. The film technology of today really allows the depiction of giant monsters and their mischief to be fully visualized. For the most part, Legendary seems to try to do a good job with its projects.

However, while it is very early, I am concerned about potential misteps like setting Kong:Skull Island in 1971, if that is indeed the case. Legendary may be creating its own monster universe, which is not based on the traditional canon (such as the sinking of Skull Island in the thirties). We'll see. This may be more about "reinvention" than remake.

Just for the record, I would very much like to see another pass at King Kong vs Godzilla using modern effects.

I think, more adventures using Kong as the main monster could be not bad. Having him roaming Skull Island with tons of (new) dinosaurs and maybe other monsters could be really funny. What I would love to see in this field is some sea monster action, well done, be it a megalodon or giant squids or something completely new, anyway. There is so much possible we cannot count. I would love to see a movie version of DEAD SEA, the novel of Tim Curran (ok, no remake at all, but could be a very visually movie!)
