H8ful Eight

#1 Post by Buc Wheat »

Watched it last night and think I'm guilty of falling for all
the hype.

Btwn Tarantino & Ennio Morricone was looking fwd to a great
western.

Wasn't. Give it a 3.

On the + side... Jackson was great and stole the show. You could
tell that alot of the Django2 script was still there in the background...
just twisted slightly to fit the new Jackson character's replacement.

Dern looked great!! Love seeing this old favorite of mine!

I'd suggest not wasting $$ on this and waiting for it to show up on
cable.

Those looking for an action packed, Kill Bill type of movie will be disappointed but I enjoyed it. It's very stylised - but what Tarantino isn't?

It's slow paced and wordy; more like a great camp-fire yarn than a slick shoot em up. He focuses on pure story-telling and, from that point of view, it works. Expect the usual tricksiness with story structure like Pulp Fiction too.

Better than Inglorious Basterds. I found myself remembering bits of it the next day - usually a good sign

IT SUCKEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

The whole movie felt rushed to get done. The story was weak, the characters and actors were the draw to pull you into thinking " Wow this is going to be great"!!

This is the second time Tarantino has let us down with another great opportunity for Kurt Russell and has let us and I am sure him down once again.

And if you think they used the N word alot in Django, you will lose count in this film. Another draw was the Morricone music score. One word,...ready.......SUCKED. I would have expected something of the classic music to come from this wizard of musical scores. But then again it was Tarantino using names to get people to sign on to this sinking ship. Plus lets cut Morricone some slack the poor guy is around 97 years of age.

Another thing that smacked me in the face was the title saying this is the 8th Tarantino film!!!!!

I will give him Res. Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill 1 & 2, and Django. The rest including this one is forgettable.

You didn't like Grindhouse?

And while I like Inglourious Basterds, it's more one of those things I will quit flipping channels when I hit it, rather than something I would actually go looking for to watch.

I guess in this age, that's considered "edgy" now a days.

Thanks guys. I had no plans to see it and now it is confirmed as a no way. Sounds like it may not even make my DVD collection and end up being a $5 rental.
I did enjoy Basterds and Django but mostly because of Christoph Waltz.

Grindhouse was a Rodriquez first part which is the Only part of that double bill to watch. The second part it is again Tarantino trying to be some kind of wordsmith to impress someone in Hollywood. It was relentless and to me most of what he was showing before any of the action was null and void. Try watching it again and see how long you can sit there while those girls in the bar talk about absolutely nothing. I would rather run my big toe into furniture. And again a waste of Kurt Russell, just like Hateful8.

Bastards? Eh, couple good parts but again its a remake of an original film. After sitting through the 3 hour version....I sat back and said ok well I wasn't surprised to see where it went, then I scratch my head and say why? Hugo Stiglitz was the best part of that film, and I think that guy never acted in a film before that one.

I dunno which hateful 8 yous guys saw.
I dug it, lots of dialogue which is getting to be whats expected from ole Quinty.
I think hes tryin to be more of a play write than a film maker now.
Due to all the heavy dialogue I did compare it to bastards and think its better. Its dialogue had more direction than death proof or bastards.
All in all had fairly good pacing, when it seemed to get too talky the scene would shift to keep a pace going.
As for bastards all I can say is...for a dirty dozen ripp off that sposed to be about a crack team goin in to do one thing and one thing only...KILL THE HELL OUTTA SOME NAZZZIS...sure wasnt alot of that going on.

That explains it.
I really like Grindhouse, but have no desire to watch Deathproof again.

I liked it. I would put it in the middle of Tarantino movies. To me it was kind of a Tarantino meets Agatha Christie in a movie that would have worked as a play with a Wild Bunch style ending kind of a thing.

Since we are ranking the Tarantino movies, for me personally it would go like this

1. Pulp Fiction
2. Reservoir Dogs
3. Kill Bill (1 and 2)
4. Hateful 8
5. Django Unchained
6. Death Proof
7. Inglorious Basterds
8. Jackie Brown

If you were to count movies he had a hand in but aren't technically Tarantino movies I would rank True Romance and From Dusk Til Dawn right up there with the first two and Hero would be in the midrange somewhere.

For me they were all enjoyable and I wouldn't go so far as to say any of them sucked.

My favorite too - I had a couple friends say they didn't like reading subtitles, so I told them I had some of my grandson's Barney dvds I would loan them next time.

Saw it this afternoon and enjoyed it. I thought all of the performances were good but especially enjoyed Jennifer Jason Lee and Walton Coggins. For a Tarantino film I'd give it a "B".

Well - I'd never planned on watching this at the popcorn-sellers, but am glad to see the positive reviews here and on the net.

Will certainly be watching this as soon as it's available for personal viewing.

I've got a group of friends who have a standing "Bro date" so to speak, in that we go to the movies and then out for a beer afterwards every Sunday night...I'm the one in charge of picking the movie...been doing this for nearly 10 years now.
I've come to find that usually the comments of this group on the Clubhouse pretty closely mirrors the tastes and likes of my friends, so I was really hesitant to suggest this one after reading the comments here.
I warned everyone ahead of time that it was being compared to the 2nd half of "DeathProof" (which we walked out of) but the others were still interested, and critics were giving it generally positive reviews (70% on Rotten Tomatoes), so we gave it a try...figured if it was really bad we'd just leave and go to the bar sooner.
Other than all of us agreeing that the middle part was kind of slow, by the time it was over we all agreed that we liked it.
The beginning; although slow, was interesting...then for a while it was slow, but after the piano solo (if you've seen it you'll know what I mean) it grabbed hold and didn't let go until the end.
It's not for everyone, I'd be particular as to who I would recommend it to, but I did enjoy it when it was finished.
Randy

...and BTW; Jackie Brown no.8??? I really liked that one.
