Ardeth Bey bust

#1 Post by Chuckenstein »

Hi. Here's Monsters from the Woods' Ardeth Bey bust in progress. The sculpture by Yagher is superb, and the casting by Paul Gill is excellent.

I added the string to the outfit. It's made from the rubber surrounding a piece of wire after the wire had been extracted.

The flesh was started as a tan color and then dry-brushed with lighter versions of that color. Finally, an even lighter mixture was mixed with matte gel medium and stippled on with a sea sponge. Thanks for looking.

As usual, looking like a damn good start to what will for sure be a great paint job.
And finally, I'm around to see your WIP "live" on the forum.
Looking forward to see what comes next!

Thanks so much guys! I really appreciate the very nice comments. (Now that I've started this WIP, I hope I don't screw it up).

Tonight, I added pastels (dull reds, browns, and violets) to certain areas of the face (under the cheek bones, ears, around the eyes, etc.) to give it a little more life. I've been having a tough time taking decent pictures and getting the colors correct, but this is as close as I could get:

Thanks Bill!

This morning, I gave it a wash made up of the base color + red iron oxide + some burnt umber, and wiped off. I then followed that by making another wash with the previous one + more burnt umber. Following that, I mixed a much lighter version of the base color + some matte gel medium and lightly dry-brushed that over the bust to bring out more of the wrinkles. After that dried and I gave it a coat of dull coat, I punched up some of the underlying colors with the previously used pastels:

This afternoon, I used washes to accentuate some of the areas that should have darker shadows (inner ears, around the eyes, nostrils, etc.). As you can see, I decided to test a couple of colors for the clothing. The skin is likely done at this point:

Always impressive stuff, Chuck...
Love your style.
When it comes to washes, what kind of mix up do you like to use?

Thanks mush_brain!
I mix acrylic craft paint with Liquitex Flow Aid that I have premixed with water (per the instructions) for small areas.
For larger areas, I mix the above, but add more water.

Got the eyes & lashes done today:

Thanks for the tips Chuck!
Shared knowledge is always very much appreciated..
Even when it comes to something "simple" like a wash, I find it very useful/intriguing to get another modeler's take on something.
Looking forward to see your progression.
I love these WIP. There's always so much to learn.

Thanks mush_brain, Frankenstones, and Miguel! Your kind words are much appreciated.

I finished the base last weekend, but haven't photographed it. Since it looks like I won't get the whole thing done this weekend, I thought I would put up one last WIP pic. At this point the hair and eyebrows are now done:
