Westworld - the series
I watched Westworld the series last night on HBO. It was interesting but I am not hooked yet. Ed Harris rocks as he always does. Nice little twist at the end will make me want to catch the next episode.

Re: Westworld - the series
I liked it.
I wasn't expecting it to grab me right off the bat. I'm hoping it's more of a slow build that just sucks you in. Those tend to be the best kind of series.

I enjoyed it. It's interesting that our two protagonists appear to be two robots. So that's an interesting twist. I have a feeling the humans are the real bad guys in this story.

Re: Westworld - the series
Man was Ed Harris awesome. Gotta say I was impressed with all the actors in the show. The girls father was really good as I don't recall being "wowed" by him before and it's always great to see Trevor from GTAV (video game) in anything.
Very few shows I watch regularly so I'll be watching this one.

I liked it a lot. I am really glad it is going with a different story line than the movie.

Are we going to see other worlds in this series? Rome, Arthurian? or

Re: Westworld - the series
My guess is that we may see glimpses of the other worlds in flashbacks. The "hosts" are recycled from other story lines so it would make sense to see the hardships they faced to build some backstory. Are we going to see other worlds in this series? Rome, Arthurian? or
just the West?
My question is do you think anybody in the control room is a robot? Maybe Anthony Hopkins is the only human.

Re: Westworld - the series
I hope (as a sci-fi and special effects fan) that we get to see some battle damaged ones with the robotic inner workings showing through later on maybe.
The part built ones they keep showing in the background are a bit plain for my liking

Re: Westworld - the series
I'm intrigued so far - not HOOKED like Game of Thrones, but it's beautifully filmed, and well produced.
Ed Harris as the malevolent guest is great - and he is, no doubt, a guest. That's why the bullets don't scratch him....
I think if they continue with the character development they'll have a winner yet again. But just not "Game of Thrones" winning...

Re: Westworld - the series
Two interesting facts I saw on IMDB
In the below-ground storage area for decommissioned androids you can see a globe statue at the bottom of the dilapidated escalators. An identical one was on display in the arrival area in "Futureworld", the sequel to "Westworld", hinting that older areas of the original park have been abandoned. In fact if you you closely at the globe you can see the word "Delos" spelled out along the circumference, the name of the park.
According the Westworld website, the cost of a trip to visit westworld is $40,000 per day.

Re: Westworld - the series
I had thought the young man from the train was a guest and Ed Harris a robot gunslinger till the moment the bullets had no effect on him.
The Harris character is a suppressed psychotic, now looking for some new thrill. I would not be surprised to find he had killed humans in the past, perhaps in his obviously lucrative line of work.
I have a feeling that theirs some form of transhumanism involved in the plot, people uploading their personality into robots. Perhaps that's what Harris is trying to find out.
The Hosts appear to be Kapek type Robots from R.U.R. ,artificial flesh, blood and bone. There may not be recognizable robotic parts in the new generation of hosts, other than the odd printed circuit like that found under the scalp.

"artificial flesh, blood and bone. There may not be recognizable robotic parts"
You may be right there but I hope not. I always feel it's a bit of a cop out.
I want to see robot-y bits when I'm watching a robot/android themed film or tv series.

Re: Westworld - the series
Odd thing about fiction dealing with artificial humanoid beings, they used to write of full metal and circuits beings as "Robots" while writing of beings made of artificially manufactured flesh and bone beings as "Androids" , but in the earliest such story "R.U.R." (Rossum's Universal Robots) the Robots were flesh and bone replicas of humans, almost but not quite clones.
The Word Robot comes from a Central European word meaning simply a human slave.
The main theme of Westworld from the first film is that the Robots were the same as slaves. They were more than just automatons, though in the first film it was not so obvious.
Elon Musk ( the only known living Bond Villain ) fears Artificial Intelligence. Perhaps he fears that Terminator style Robots could defeat his private army of Cyborg Ninja assassins.

you mention "cyborg"...where do they fit in with your reference to fiction? same as "android" from what i can tell, no?temperflash wrote:Odd thing about fiction dealing with artificial humanoid beings, they used to write of full metal and circuits beings as "Robots" while writing of beings made of artificially manufactured flesh and bone beings as "Androids" , but in the earliest such story "R.U.R." Re: Westworld - the series
No a Cyborg is composed of living organic matter bonded to mechanical and electronic components. It never stops being human so long as the brain remains basically organic, even though some parts of the brain may be replaced or augmented.
An Android is built to be artificial from the get go.
The R.U.R. robot flesh and bone was not natural organic tissue, it was a vat grown synthetic analog much like the glimpses of Westworld Hosts manufacture suggests.
