Timeslip Alien Statue Project: how do I create slime?

#1 Post by Foo fighter »

I bought this resin kit about 15 years ago and have finally decided to assemble and paint this unusual piece. Its an impressive statue standing almost two feet high and Ive enjoyed working on it for the most part. The resin is old and is there is some kind of finish or coating on the resin that has made applying a base coat of primer very challenging (yes, it was thoroughly washed before beginning). The biggest problem has been filling and repairing the hundreds of pin holes and casting imperfections particularly in the base. Anyway, I am nearing completion of the assembly and have applied a base coat of Vallejo black primer to the alien. As I move forward, I was thinking about enhancing the base by adding slime or "goo" for added effect. A friend of mine once used expanding spray foam insulation to create some really wild looking slime but I have lost touch with him over the years. Are there any tutorials or suggestions on this topic? Here are pics of my work in progress:

Two part epoxy mixed w/ some transparent paint for color (if desired) should work. If you want puddles, that will work just fine, and if you're patient, you can even use it for mouth "strings".

As Rick says, two-part epoxy with some paint is the easiest route.

Here are a couple projects where I've used that method (for the strands like in the 2nd pic, just use a toothpick to pull the epoxy back-n-forth to attach it to various points):

Hope this helps

Rick and Jim- Thanks for the advice. It sounds very "doable" and I like the idea of being able to add color to the mix. I thought I read somewhere that you could achieve a similar effect using FUTURE but I have to believe that the consistency of the FUTURE would be thinner and harder to work with. Thanks again!

I seem to remember someone saying you could coat something like fishing line with Future to get similar effects.
Attach the fishing line where you want it, then coat it with future to give it more of an organic look.

Coat the fishing line with the 5-minute epoxy. Also there's hot melt glue.

When I couldn't get the right timing for the epoxy to form strings, I used a clear styrene rod and connected the eye with the shoulder with some drool -

I haven't done it but I also heard UHU glue will also form thin clear strings as it dries...
