Sankei Howl's Moving Castle: Finished!

#1 Post by Rocketeer »

While I was poking around on HobbyLink Japan a while ago, my eye was caught by a papercraft kit of Howl's Moving Castle made by Sankei. I had a couple of sweet little Sankei kits already, so I decided to splurge and buy this one.

It comes in a classy paperback-size box:

And inside are maybe twenty laser-cut sheets of various weights and colors of cardstock, and a little packet of "grass" to decorate the base:

Yesterday I spent at a build session at a friend's house, and I was able to get the basic shape together. It's made up of numerous layers of cardboard (about 50), built up contour-map style around a central core which aligns the layers for you. That shape then gets partially clad with more cardboard to create the final surfaces. The engineering is perfect, and it's been pure pleasure so far. I made a couple little chisel-like tools by gluing shards of scalpel blade into wooden dowel handles; they work great to sever the last little connections between the parts and the cardboard sheet.

So here's how it stands this morning. The whole thing is super petite; about the size of a goose egg:

The model has a forest of smokestacks, and they're made by wrapping sheet around a ribbed backbone. I'm a little worried about that; my previous experience with wrapping paper into tubes resulted in many fingerprints everywhere. But we'll see.

Very cool.
I've never actually worked with a paper model before, so hearing how it goes is very interesting.

It's been very pleasant so far. The instructions are clear and everything fits just right. I think that when it comes time to skin the upper part of the body, I may have to level out the surface with a sanding drum in a Dremel; some of the layers are just a tad misaligned. If I'd realized what was going to go there, I could have devoted more effort to getting them aligned. Perhaps I should have studied the instructions a bit more before diving in.

Progress as of day three. The light grey castellated areas are where I was worried about the underlying surface not being flat enough. I used a little sanding drum in a Dremel to gently even out the surface a bit before I glued on the cladding, and everything went smoothly. The Castle is sitting on a little aluminum plate I had a friend make for me; I was using it to make sure all four feet touch the ground.

Progress as of this morning. There are about a dozen little "houses" that have to be assembled and added here and there; did that yesterday, and this morning I finished the last of the smokestacks. No fingerprints, although I had a bad moment with one of the conical transitions and had to trim a bit; if I had glued the previous piece on exactly correctly the issue wouldn't have arisen at all. This thing calls for the utmost care in getting things glued exactly where they're supposed to be. I also screwed up one of the sides of the tall half-brick "house" you can see in the pic, and had to make a new one. No biggie; there was plenty of leftover card to cut it from.

That is just the coolest little thing! It's amazing the amount of engineering that goes into that.
You have a lot more patience than I do. It's coming along Beautifully.

...And here are pictures of the completed Castle. What a pleasure to build! I added a bit of blue paint in a couple of the windows:

I watched the movie last night for the first time, with my wife: "Oh, look, the model has a little cabin hanging off the side just like that! And that little balcony!" ;)
