Any Administrator?

#1 Post by RockinResin »

Hi. If you would, please cancel my membership. I prefer to continue a more private life without the squabbles that are associated with social media.

Thank you to all those who have contributed to my modeling appetite. You know who you are. I will find the means to keep up with the latest and greatest of the industry. My investigative skills will support that. Any “Who”, thanks a million to the administration for the up keep that goes along with this project.

Peace Out and “Piece Of Mind”

Curious...
Why such a public request for such a private reason?
And as for 'squabbles'... it's certainly been a while here at the CH, which I find really refreshing and the reason I stop by everyday.

Those seeking to troll and to be trolled have found Twitter and Facebook as this type of forum does not "deliver" that type of "dopamine hit" nearly as quickly. Hence only those of us not looking for such time wasting endeavors are, happily, left around here ....

Funny you say that, having admitted you don't use them.

You don't have to use them to know social media has no shortage of trolls. Forums included. Everything needs good moderators to keep things under control.

And speaking of which - play nice Brian - I like refreshment same as Derek :)

This thread has served it's purpose. No need to beat a dead horse folks.

Well my Good (former) Doctor Holmes, *AHEM*, I am in fact one of the MODERATORS of a Facebook Group on Al Jolson, and just yesterday had to deal with a 'food fight' amongst 3 gentlemen of our own generation (50s-60s). Not pleasant. Can't imagine being a moderator of a 10000+ member group. (They couldn't pay me to do it).

What I do NOT do on FB is post personal data, or go about looking for flame wars or 'cheap thrills'. I do not read the (fake) 'newsfeed', and I have, over time, trained FB to show me NO political posts without having to block anyone. (I just clicked 'do not show me this type of post' on those posts). It took about a year to train FB, but the past 3 years my personal 'feed' has been 95% crap free. FB is very useful, BTW, as a tool to stay in quick communication with my family and friends back in the old country (via the messenger system). So, like the 'idiot phones', FB can be quite useful - so long as you control IT, and not the other way around.

I visit the FB modeling groups only when I post photos of one of my new models (which means: infrequently). I have discussed elsewhere why the 'daily scrolling addiction' required to 'stay up to date' on FB has made those types of sites largely unusable for my own hobby interests.

As far as Twitter goes: You bet that, being sane, I have NO Twitter account and will never get one. Having said that, I visit Scott Adams Twitter Feed daily on my browser to see what interesting things he's linked to there. I don't need to be a member or post to do that.

Anything else you'd like to know?

Off topic - there's a Facebook group on Al Jolson? And people argue about him on it?

Man, the web has a page for everyone.....

There are actually at least FOUR Facebook pages dedicated to preserving the legacy and art of The World's Greatest Entertainer.

As far as arguing .... well, so long as there are people around, there will be arguing  ... and so long as there is Internet, there will be misunderstandings owing to the lack of face-to-face interaction (and inability to hear nuance, tones and to read facial expressions, not to mention different senses of humor - or complete lack thereof) ...

"Busty Bertha from Bridlington" would present a challenge to that title - but then that's a different sort of entertainment.

To continue off-topic for just a minute, an interesting anecdote in this vein comes to my mind, Spike. In 1949 or 50, Abe Lastfogel, head of the William & Morris Agency, took a young Sammy Davis Jr (at the time appearing with his father and uncle as "The Will Mastin Trio") into one of the prestigious Hollywood clubs for lunch. But first he took Sammy over to a table where Al Jolson was having lunch.

He said: "Al, I want you to meet the OTHER "World's Greatest Entertainer"! As Sammy related to friends (and mentioned in his autobiography), Mr. Jolson was very gracious to him.

And if you look up Sammy's performances - including dead-on impersonations, dancing and singing from this time period - they are on Youtube - you will see what Mr Lastfogel was talking about.

About three decades later, the comedian Alan King and a few younger friends sat with George Burns at a Las Vegas Nightclub watching Sammy perform his incredible show. When it was over, Burns remarked it was an incredible show and that Sammy was the greatest entertainer that he had ever seen. Incredulously, King asked him: "Better than Jolson?"

Burns puffed on his cigar, thought for a minute, then answered: "No. Jolson was better." (One of the other fellows at that table, a well-known TV producer of the past 30+ years, who worked for King as a young man and knew both Sammy and Burns well, told me those two stories.)
