Marvel Spider-Man Paint Your Own Figure - Venom - now finished!

Hi all,

So this is the next little project on my list:

Image

Has anyone else seen these or had a go at one? Yes, I know, it looks like a kid's toy & even says ages 5+ on the box, but wait..

My son found one of these (last on the shelf) in a store in the UK (Home Bargains), but I think they're available on Ebay & Amazon. He got it for just GBP 4.99 ($6 or EUR 5.75) & painted it for his son, & I thought it looked great. By chance he stumbled over another one a few weeks later, & grabbed it for me. The paints & brush included are, how can I say this politely.. terrible. But the figure itself is actually really cool! He stands about 6.5in (16cm) tall, & is hollow cast from some sort of resin. The base has a nice grainy texture, while the figure itself is really smooth & quite reasonably detailed. There's a very slight seam which is already partially sanded from the factory, but it does need a bit more work & some refinement before painting.

There appears to be a few figures in this series, including Spider-Man, The Lizard, a different (but somehow not so cool) Venom, Green Goblin, Electro, there's a couple of Avengers as well & even Guardians Of The Galaxy! Sadly some look pretty dodgy & lacking any kind of detail.

Anyway, here's a couple of photos of Venom before I've done anything, this is straight out of the box...

Image
The teeth will need sharpening & the end of the tongue needs to be a bit more pointed, but otherwise I think this isn't bad for the price!

Image
The spider emblem is really sharp, & the muscle definition is pretty good too!

Image
I like the pose!

I'll shoot some grey primer as soon as I can & I think that will help to show the detail, I definitely want to add veins (you can't have Venom without veins) & there's got to be some drool hanging off that tongue! I might have a go at making some kind of broken container as well (like the glass ones in the Venom movie) with the symbiote oozing out to envelope the figure.

More soon, thanks for looking!

So here's Venom in primer..

In these closer pics you can see there's one cleaning up needed & a few pinholes to fill etc.

Image

Image

Interestingly now the primer is on you can see those tiny lines in some places - I wonder if the original was 3D printed & a mold was made from it for casting?

I think your theory is correct.
Looks exactly like what they did.

I remember seeing those "paint 'em yourself" kits a few times in the past - around X-mas time IIRC.
Yep, those look like grow lines to me. IIRC that's what some producers would do - 3D print one, and then once cleaned up, that one would be molded and casted.
Looks like the person in charge of this one was a little lazy with the sandpaper. No matter, a few minutes with yours will clean this bad boy up.
Looking fwd to see how it turns out.

I finally had a bit of time to work on Venom this weekend, so here's a couple of pics with some veins added. At first I 'drew' them on using PVA glue applied with a cocktail stick, but after a coat of primer they didn't show up as much as I wanted so I tried again with Green Stuff filler using the long fine applicator that comes with the tube, & now I'm much happier :D

Hey guys, happy new year!

Sorry it's been so long for an update but over the Xmas break I had some time to finish Venom, so here goes..

I decided I wasn't that happy with the teeth as they come, so I cut those away (not fun as I have a morbid fear of dentists!) & replaced them with the ends of plastic toothpicks - the result I think is much better, altho there were a few choice words as the pieces kept pinging out of my tweezers

So here you can see the top row replaced

Then the bottom

And this is the result after priming - much more Venomish

Next I sprayed the whole figure with a black base coat

Followed by white 'zenithal' highlights - I'm not sure if this made any difference to the finished figure at all but it's a technique I've seen on YouTube videos used by wargaming figure painters, & I thought I'd give it a try

Unfortunately, in my excitement of painting the figure interspersed with Xmas food (& wine :rolf: ), I neglected to get any more in progress photos  but basically I airbrushed a purple/blue mixture to give shape to the muscles & then drybrushed with light blue to add highlights. A lightened shade of the blue & a very fine brush was used for the veins, the spider logo front & back is white & very slightly shaded, & white eyes. The teeth & claws are off-white with a yellow tinge & then gloss varnished along with the eyes - & of course a bit of drool on the tongue, using a drop of thick balsa glue from a tube. The base is basically as it came, I just sprinkled a little fine gravel here & there, drybrushed the rock, & added a couple of tufts of grass.

Overall, a fun little figure, not perfect but something a little different in the cabinet :D

You're a braver man than I vis-a-vis replacing the teeth!!! The end product of the, lets call it the 'toothpick tedium', is much, MUCH scarier to look at! :D Great work on the base too! Well done! =D> =D> =D>

Your Venom turned out well. Excellent job on the teeth.
You showed great “poise on” this venomous build. :)

Looks good.
What impresses me the most is that nice crisp, smooth white on the logo.
Not something very easy to achieve with a brush.

Thank you - yes, getting those teeth in place was a test but well worth it :D

Thank you - it was a bit easier because the design is raised up from the figure but I did end up making quite a few corrections along the way :D
