Sealing/Finishing paint

#1 Post by weird_oh84 »

Hello,

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I’m new to painting resin. I have painted latex masks for the past 20 years but the sealing of those is completely different.

-What is the preferred sealer for painted resin / vinyl?

-What is a good Satin finish for skin like paint jobs ?

-What is a good High Gloss finish for things that look wet?

Will most Krylon products work? Matte finish , Crystal Clear, etc?

Can I use Liquitex Varnishes and Mediums?

Thanks again for your help!

For matte finishes, Krylon MATTE finish. For both vinyl and resin. Period.

I have tried the *alleged* "artists" finishes that said "matte" .... And wouldn't you know, every one of them came out looking a little bit shiny. :cussing:

Krylon MATTE finish is hands down the BEST for a matte finish. 😉

I still use Testor's Dulcote (when it can be found) and also use Krylon.

For a wet look I use Tamiya gloss and Triple Thick. These two products are used primarily for eyes.

I second Derek's opinion of Dulcote for flat finishes. Behr Chalk from Home Depot does a decent job as well. For gloss, I've used a floor wax - Pledge Revive It. I find most of the "matte" sprays to be too shiny, regardless of brand.

Overall, I much prefer Duplicolor and Krylon over Rustoleum. The Rustoleum nozzles are inconsistent and seem to clog often.

I will echo the others. I love Krylon for flat, matte, and satin.
Dulcote is even better as it is lacquer but it is getting hard to find.

For gloss, as much as I hate to say it, I love the Rustoleum crystal clear gloss. Last couple years, I've been using it one eyes as the last step to calling the kit done.
I spray it into the lid, then use a paintbrush to apply it. Gotta get good at hitting it in pretty much one pass though. If you try to go back over it, you are opening up a can of worms. Brush strokes, lumps, pulling up paint, all kinds of things can happen.
But it looks so much better than any bottled clear gloss I have found.
