T-Rex chasing Malcolm kit build

#1 Post by Dr. Brad »

Hey everyone! Took a bit of a break from Trek modelling and it's been quite a while since I built a dinosaur kit! Here is my build of the X-Plus 1/35 scale JP kit of a T-Rex being lured away by Ian Malcolm. It's a well done kit, and is an excellent representation of the JP T-Rex! I made it for a friend’s birthday present. She really liked it! Jurassic Park is one of her all time favourite movies.

Painting this kit turned out to be more challenging than I had thought it would be, simply because I had to try to paint it so it at least resembled the T-Rex in the scene. It took a few tries to get the colours close enough. I found out there were three different JP T-Rexes, thanks to an excellent reference I found online. Colors were mostly Tamiya and Vallejo acrylics applied with an airbrush, some hand brushing, dry-brushing, and a wash to finish to things off.

All in all, it’s a great kit. I bought another one and hope to do a scene with the Rex going after a Gallimimus!

Thanks guys! It was quite a rewarding kit to build and paint! And Al, I do agree - the kit does a great job of capturing the feel of the scene in terms of being very dynamic!

That looks great.
Sounds like you had the same problem I run into. I have a general idea of what I want my dino to look like, but finding the colors to make that happen can be a challenge.
Love the patterning you did on it. Looks awesome.

How small was that human? Looks like you did a good job on him as well.

Fantastic! ! I think you did a terrific job of the T-rex -- he has real bulk. The color and patternation are spot on. I have a bias towards the color of the rex. I have to resist making every beastie I do that color. There's just something about brown for me I guess. The rest of the scene is beautifully rendered too. The only aspect I'm not convinced of is the nameplate. The color doesn't really work for me but that's a personal thing.

Thanks everyone! Malcolm is I think the figure is around an inch and a half tall (maybe more) But that’s just a rough guesstimate.

Regarding the nameplate, I must confess that I just couldn’t get it to look right with all the various Jurassic Park logo colours. I went for what thought was second best. I tried to make it like rock or concrete colour but I do agree the actual Jurassic Park logo colours would’ve been cool. That said, my friend like what I did, because she thought the logo would pop too much compared to the rest of the diorama. So I’m happy she liked that too.

@tay666 Yes, it was a bit of a challenge to find colours that I thought were at least close enough. First, I mixed a base color, tried that, didn’t like it, and ended up going to a hobby store and finding something that was a close enough approximation to what I wanted. And even then it wasn’t perfect.

That is a really good point. Gotta keep the nameplate from overpowering the scene.
