GENRES OF FANTASTIC MODELS

This guide summarises the major genres of fantastic media as they appear in model kits (injection styrene, vinyl, resin, 3D prints). It reflects actual kit availability across Aurora/Monarch/Moebius, Japanese vinyl, modern garage kits, and contemporary sculptor output.

1. CLASSIC HORROR (FILM & LITERATURE)

The single most represented category in the hobby.

1. Universal Monsters — Dracula, Frankenstein’s Creature, Bride, Mummy, Wolf Man, Phantom, etc.
2. Hammer Horror — Christopher Lee’s Dracula, Frankenstein cycles, The Gorgon, The Reptile.
3. Silent/Golden Age — Nosferatu, Caligari, London After Midnight.
4. Modern Horror Icons — Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers, Leatherface, Pennywise.
5. Creature Horror — werewolves, ghouls, zombies, demons, cryptids.

STRENGTHS: Strong sculptural presence, public-domain characters, instantly recognisable silhouettes.

2. SCIENCE FICTION (RETRO & CONTEMPORARY)

Second largest category; vehicle- and robot-heavy.

1. 1950s Atomic/Space-Age SF — Destination Moon, When Worlds Collide, This Island Earth, Forbidden Planet.
2. Robots & Androids — Robby, Gort, Maria (Metropolis), B9, retro spacemen/women.
3. Pulp/Serial SF — rockets, rayguns, explorers, ITC-style spacecraft.
4. Real-Space Crossovers — Mercury/Apollo subjects used as near-future SF.

STRENGTHS: Spacecraft and robots scale beautifully; attracts both SF and real-space modellers.

3. KAIJU & TOKUSATSU

A major category, especially in vinyl and resin.

1. Kaiju — Godzilla (all eras), Gamera, Rodan, Mothra, King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla.
2. Tokusatsu Heroes — Ultraman, Kamen Rider, Super Sentai.
3. Tokusatsu Machines — Gotengo (Atragon), Mogera, super-subs, mecha variants.
4. Modern KaijuPacific Rim jaegers and creatures.

STRENGTHS: Large dynamic sculpts, strong Japanese kit tradition, enduring fan demand.

4. FANTASY & MYTHIC BEINGS

Extremely strong in resin and 3D-printed sculpts.

1. Sword & Sorcery — Conan, Red Sonja (unlicensed), barbarians, sorcerers.
2. Dragons & Mythic Creatures — griffins, wyverns, hydras, minotaurs.
3. Fairy-Tale & Folklore — witches, goblins, forest spirits.
4. Ray Harryhausen Creatures — skeletons, Talos, Medusa, Kali, Cyclops, Kraken.
5. Elves, Orcs, Dwarves — non-GW interpretations for copyright reasons.

STRENGTHS: Expressive anatomy and painter-friendly surfaces.

5. THE WEIRD & UNCANNY

A sculptor-driven niche with significant growth.

1. Lovecraftian Horror — Cthulhu, Deep Ones, Shoggoths, Elder Things.
2. Uncanny Humanoids — distorted figures, surreal hybrids, del Toro/Beksinski-inspired.
3. Weird-Victorian & Gaslamp — occult detectives, séance scenes, eldritch London.

STRENGTHS: Garage kit artists favour original concepts not tied to licences.

6. MONSTERS, CRYPTIDS & PALEO-FANTASTIC

1. Dinosaurs & Paleo-Creatures — accurate or cinematic; from Airfix and Revell to Sideshow and modern resin.
2. Cryptids — Bigfoot, Mothman, Jersey Devil, Chupacabra.
3. Paleo-Fantastic — speculative evolution creatures, soft-tissue reconstructions.

STRENGTHS: Crossover appeal between natural history, horror, and fantasy.

7. SUPERNATURAL & PARANORMAL

1. Witches, occultists, demons.
2. Ghosts, spectres, phantoms.
3. Possessed figures and exorcism-style subjects.
4. Victorian ghost-story dioramas.

STRENGTHS: Atmospheric lighting, transparent effects, evocative bases.

8. PULP ADVENTURE

1. Jungle Adventure — vine-swingers, lost temples, pulp explorers.
2. Hollow Earth / Lost Worlds — serpent people, dinosaurs, Atlanteans.
3. 1930s Serial Aesthetics — masked villains, rocket-pack heroes, cliffhanger characters.

STRENGTHS: Largely public-domain aesthetics; strong diorama potential.

9. STEAMPUNK / DIESELPUNK / ATOMPUNK

1. Victorian Tech — airships, automata, aether devices, goggles-and-brass motifs.
2. Dieselpunk — 1930s–40s alternate-tech machinery, heavy armour hybrids.
3. Atompunk — fins, chrome rockets, ray pistols, retro-futurist suits.

STRENGTHS: Ideal for kitbashing; painter-friendly metal/clothing textures.

10. MODERN CREATURE DESIGN & CONCEPT ART KITS

1. Digital-sculpt monsters, angels, demons, hybrids.
2. Futuristic suits, armoured figures, exoskeletons.
3. Anatomical-fantasy creatures inspired by Terryl Whitlatch and modern concept artists.
4. Del Toro–style original designs (non-licensed).

STRENGTHS: 3D printing has enabled small-run, high-quality artistic kits.
