Any Prog Rock fans here?

I recently got some decent headphones and it sent me on a Prog Rock whirlwind. I had stepped away from the style for a few, but the headphones and the a recent Yes concert, with my 13 year old daughter, relaunched my love. Right now I am listening to the brilliant Fragile from Yes.

So, do we have any Proggies here?

I know we have a Fish/Marillion fan here. Who was that again? Stand up, good sir! We need to speak again about them.

From maybe the biggest Rush fan on the planet, buy their latest dvd.

I saw them on this last tour twice, and that Clevland show was on par with when they played Jones Beach. I honestly think it may have been the best concert Ive ever seen.

A couple of months ago VH1 or one of the music channels was playing a couple of their live shows, which I believe are the DVDs available. I got hooked watching them. Normally I don't buy music DVDs due to the fact that they get very little replay from me. It isn't too often I sit down to watch, then rewatch a concert. Is the one you speak of that one that has the old 70s cover?

No, their last tour, Time Machine included in their 2nd set the entire Moving Pictures album.

Although not the actual performance from the dvd, this is from the tour. To me this solo was worth the price of admission alone.

Aspect ration 1.33:1??? Seriously? I can't remember the last time I saw something new actually using that ratio. I guess Rush is figuring some of their diehards refuse to progress out of the 70s, even though they are Progressive.

Yep... Been a big fan of so called "Progressive Rock" from it's early days... Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Jethro Tull, King Crimson,
Genesis and early Pink Floyd are a few of the bands that sort of pioneered that style of music. I was drawn to their Music by FM Rock Radio
of the late 60's and early 70's.

Back then the stations would play an album in it's entirety which really helped to expose me the various artists and the landmark albums
they were putting out... Like "Close to the Edge" & "Tales From The Topographic Oceans" from Yes, ELP's first 3 albums, Jethro Tull's
"A Passion Play" and "Thick as a Brick".

I'm a progressive rock and progressive metal fan.Always like Rush,Yes,Pink Floyd, Billy Thorpe"Children of the Sun"!,and.other Classics.In the Eighties I started liking Progressive Metal such as Queensryche,and later on Dream Theater,Fates Warning,Sanctuary,Savatage,Helloween,and Pretty Maids.
After Y2K,such bands as Coheed and Cambria,Iced Earth came into my cd player.There are many other good ones not mentioned.

Hackett and Howe, not quite living up to what they should have created. Yup, I remember them well.

Yup, you're the one boxer! Almost bought the newest Fish, 13 Star. I was about to grab it, then I stumbled onto the band Discipline and became mildly obsessed with them. I still intend to grab 13th, though, as it does sound pretty good. That "Arc of the Curve" tune (I think it is called that) sounds like the best he has been since leaving Marillion. Well, aside from his vocals he handed in for Ayreon.

My love of Marillion has also finely been rekindled. I finally gave Marbles its due, and am in love with it. I intend to get Happiness in the next week. From there I will probably grab the much-maligned Somewhere Else.

My wife bought me a pair of Sennheiser headphones for Christmas, so my Prog kick is about to head into a ridiculous territory. I am amazed at how incredible Yes sounds through good headphones. Possibly the best Rock band I have heard through them. "Roundabout" is drool worthy. The production, seperation, and depth is just silly on that tune.

zombiezilla,the 13th star is fantastic cd,i loved this one.fish as just done the rounds on a mini acoustic tour.he's testing the pipes as he had a few nodules removed from the throat.he has a new cd this year too.i always go back to raingods with zippos and felini nights.
marillion and marbles is fantastic,somewhere else is great too,the older of both marillo eras the best music laid though.

Marillion have the soundtrack to my life.....how about these for a few tales from the road:

Seen over 200 fish/marillion gigs.
Been around europe and usa to gigs.
Met my wife at a Marillo gig, Mark Wilkinson designed and made our wedding invitations and drew portraits of us on our wedding day as a gift paid for from friends.
Fish's ex guitarist John Wesley wrote and recorded a song espescially for our wedding.
I was at the studio when the band recorded Fellini Days.......I could go on and on and on

Have to be brutaly honest here though....................................Marillion have been very,very patchy since Radiation, their last true great album. Ever since then there has been a lot of filler and they really have to loose the Beatles fixation

2. See, and I feel that Radiation is kind of "blah," and absolutely love Marbles.

3. For me, Marillion has been the stronger outfit between all of the Marillion splinter outfits. In fact, I would probably rank them as Marillion best, then Arena, then somewhere down the line Fish.

nice one pete,what a surprise there,love fellini and zippos before it.how you get into the studio to watch fellini being recorded?i cat compare to that lot but have seen both quite a few times. still love clutching at straws the most from marillion.

Fave Fish album is Fellini
Fave Marillo album is split between Brave and AOS.

Just seem to think Marillo have gone off the boil with the last few. The reason I love early Marillion is down to one thing, Rothery's guitar sound . There was not another player that had anything like his technique,sound and melodic style. I love the way he just sounds so fluid on stuff like Sugar Mice, Runaway Girl, Easter etc then he goes into those beautiful solo's which put him apart from anyone else

Last few albums sounds to me as if he didn't turn up in the studio
And Hogarth's lyrics have gone awol........what was he thinking off with that down in the dark with the tree ferns #$#$#$#

Hogarth is, IMO, the "make or break" part of Marillion now days. When he is on, the man will lift them to insane heights. When he is off, he will drag them to an equal depth. I like it when he dips into those dark places with his lyrics, and it works.

For me Fish needs to find a solid creative partner. He also needs to find a place where his voice works. His melodies are all the same, and he has no voice for actually singing, it seems. He would rather do that "talking" thing that he does instead of actually breaking into a killer melody.

Back when he was with Marillion there was no way in heck I could ever imagine enjoying a Fish-less Marillion. When Vigil and Seasons came out I was convinced that I was right, and I would follow fish anywhere. Then Internal and Holidays came out and I was 100% sure I would probably never enjoy Marillion again.

Then I finally SAW Marillion (for the very first time), and I warmed to Hogarth a bit.

Then Marillion released Brave, and Fish released Suits, and the tides turned forever. Brave was the strongest thing either camp had done, and it was possibly better than three of the Fish Marillion albums. For my tastes, Fish just got stuck in a rut of a style and he never climbed out. Even bringing in Wilson didn't change the style.

I still follow Fish, and I still hold out hope. I heard one song on 13th Star that sounded really good, but the rest that I heard was more of the same. I want to be wowed by the man again, and I do believe he still has it in him somewhere. Oh, the closest I have heard Fish actually sounding like Fish in the post Marillion days was his work on the Ayreon CD. Something he had no creative control on.

brave better than fish marillion albums ,sorry but i don't go for that.esters tear,fugazi,magpie flew them to arenas.clutching kept them there and thats where they woulda stayed if fish had'nt jump ship.brave is an excellent album though.
hogarth works so well in marillion but as a solo artist he seams very average and lost,ice cream genius was crap.i still look forward more to a new fish cd than i do marillion.
