BUG: Old Beetle - More Pictures of the finished Kit

#1 Post by muffinman »

hey clubhouse! how have you all been???

it's been an awfully long time since i posted a topic here...
so it's only very fitting that the project i'm starting here is actually a modification/completion
of a sculpt that i started many moons ago in may 2008 as part of one of the great clubhouse sculpt JAMs.
have a look back in time if you like:
http://theclubhouse1.net/phpBB3//viewto ... =9&t=51373

well, i'm reworking this ol' beetle because i want to give it to my dad as a birthday present.
i have been giving him a sculpt a year for the last ten years and will certainly continue to do so
til... well, til he gets tired of em.
the thing with this one is: i don't have much spare time on my hands these days. but since it's the big 70 for daddy-o
i thought it might be fitting to overhaul this here wip.
so, here's the first pic. more to come soonish!
Image

ooohh..., molding and casting and painitng this is gonna be a mountain of fun!

cheers!

I just open up your threads and start smiling immediately. What job do you have now that
limits your spare time? If it's anything but sculpting, it's absolutely criminal. As far as I'm
concerned, everything you do is just brilliant. Can't wait to see this guy progress. Great to
have you back MM!

hey troy, so good to 'see' you, too, man!
thanks again for the warm welcome-back!
by the way: your stuff still blows me away! look at my hair: all wind-swept!

my new job is basically my old job - only that it's just my two work-mates and me now. no more bosses. we went out on our own. still the same job description: mock-ups and prototypes for tv and print media commercials.
and what's really nice: i'm sculpting a whole bunch of cartoon characters for a guy named Joscha Sauer whose
'Nichtlustig' (Notfunny) cartoons have quite a following here in germany. doing that on a day-job basis is a dream come true.
we done a website :D : www.fakehouse.com

apart from that i kinda took a swing at customizing vinyl toys and have been commissioned ever since i posted my first finished piece sometime in early 2010. good because it get a little more $ in, but i can't seem to find enough time for sculpting my own stuff that way... but you know: new year and all that, i'll try and balance all the stuff better so i get to do a little more of everything.
if you want you can have a look at my flickr thing: http://www.flickr.com/photos/48321102@N04/sets/

so, anyway, this particular bug here will just have to progress a little quicker - with the deadline being Feb 09.
gotta burn the ol candle from both ends, i guess...

gotta run. good to see y'all again. later!

ps:

found time to refine some of the parts today.
forgot how i managed to get such nice random patterns with those warts and nubs on the original parts...
must rework those new ones. maybe it's really just a matter of 'don't think - just do'...
probably, yeah. that's what i'm best at.

cheers, y'all!

I love this guy, he looks like something out of a Calvin and Hobbes strip - so much character! Sorry if I missed it, but what material are you working in? Looks so clean, great work!

i feel very flattered, mike. thank you kindly!

well, here's a little update. the limbs are put in place with just a few little drops of wax each
and the beetle will be taken apart as soon as the silicone has arrived.
but first i have to finish the keys of the feelers - such tiny fiddlybits... oh well...

hope you like it so far.

then: what's for base? i thought maybe a big ball of mud or something... should be done quickly.
i would like a tree bark-esque base too, but don't wanna take the real stuff.
and sculpting summing like that will probably take too long...
decisions, decisions.

when i think about molding and casting those antennae
(from flexible material,no less), i feel a little like wiley,
hanging from that branch atop of that cliff...
but thanks a lot nonetheless, troy :D

One of the coolest sculpts I've seen in quite awhile! Great looking little Bug, MM!
I kind of like the idea of a base on bark with maybe some moss or fungi, but the mud base sounds good as well. Best of luck in casting this little guy up!
