Cheers Trev!

Been a while but done a bit more on this...
A bit of exterior part modding and interior panel paintwork and the like.

Needed to look at the exhaust stacks.
As stock parts go they are fine but a little extra required here for my purposes.
The stock parts.

Image

Image

So normally I would imagine, just a dab of black paint in the recesses and done.
Not on my watch methinks!

Polygon punching time!

Image

A few test prints later and the results as follows...

Image

Image

Image

Somewhat better in the looks dept. methinks.

Image

Some Alclad chrome and a bit of 4mm diameter aluminium tube up the middle should have it sorted.

A bit of a comparison shots thing in position.

Image

Image

Yeah, think i can work with that.

Interior panel work next up and one addition I want to make.

Bought in an MP3 player kit, comes as a bunch of components and a boards.
A little solder slinging later get's this.

Image

I got two and this is the test one to get an idea of what it is capable of.
Simply put, load the music files on to a micro SD card, hit the buttons and music is had.
My intention is to hook this up to the reel to reel tape deck, board in the base and speaker under the bed in the back.

Hit the switch, tape deck will do it's thing and music will play...
I hope.

But onward with the panels!
Rear and sliding door insides painted up.

Image

Likewise for the dividing wall between the kitchen and bed area parts.

Image

Image

Image

A quick look see at the parts as they will fit together.

Image

The counter bit woodwork with the fridge door.

Image

The inside body panel next to the sliding door part.

Image

Front door panels done.
Now to me, they look ok but a bit blank so to speak.
Some small research and a bit of polygon punching later got interior door and window crank handles printed.

Some Tamiya silver, thinned Tamiya smoke and a dab of paint got it done.

Image

Image

Image

A few holes drilled and in place on the doors and a handle for the sliding one.
Are they accurate? No idea.
Do they look nice, to me yes and that's good enough.

Image

Image

Onward with the bed area.

Now I want a used/lived in look for this rather than the pristine show van thing.
The bed base has some rather nice relief so some
furious drybrushing later brought that out to my satisfaction.

Image

Image

A blanket was in order and tried an idea firmly in the
'No idea if this will work but let's give a try anyway' category.

Went online to find a decent image of a woven blanket.
Found one and did a little copy/paste/clean up work to make a decal.
Said decal then laid on to some tissue paper with plenty of scenic glue which is a very thin PVA type of thing.

Once all dry, trimmed and then re-saturated with the glue and crumpled up to give it the kicked off/pushed aside look.
Some shoving and creasing here and there got it done.

Image

Image

Image

A bit of cleaning up to get shot for the glue splash marks and finish the paintwork on the wall panel.
Dryfir look see.

Image

Image

Image

Aye, that'll about do it.
Opposite side wall done.
Just went with a decal for the TV screen rather than the lighting thing to make my life a bit easier.

Image

Image

Driver/passenger overhead console painted up.

Image

And that's the lot for now, more later!
:D

K – so my most recent posts on Ian’s threads have included comparisons/analogies to the “Monsters of Rock” festival & comic books . . . and I’m going to go with “Jackanory” on this one.

A story unfolding before our eyes.

Of course – our North American brethren won’t have an effin’ clue WHAT I’m going on about – but Ian (the talented one – not me) will. I can even hear the theme music playing in the background (probably NOT one of those Mr. Lawrence will include on that rather “my goodness – that’s an amazing idea!” MP3 player.

Then we have the blanky – there was some rather large smiling taking place as I saw that unfold (there’s an ironic pun in there somewhere).

This good man should have his own TV show . . . I'm thinking a modelling version of "MacGyver", where the bad guys have to move at 1:16 speed to give Ian time to work his magic & to allow the paint to dry.

Not too shabby Mr. L. . . . not too shabby at-all =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

Man, the ingenuity on display with this build.
That blanket came out amazing.

And the idea with the MP3 player . . . :o

Such an ambitious undertaking.

Cheers muchly for the kind words fellas! :D

Right, more to come I said and here's the latest goings on going on...

Onward with this beastie and some fiddling about with light up stuff.
Each side of the bed area walls have a saloon style mirror with a hurricane lamp.
The parts...

Image

The 'mirror' parts have decals like so...

Image

Decided on a slight change and polished up aluminium tape got brought in after the inevitable woodwork paint.
Made up some decals and applied after a gloss coat.

Image

Image

Hurricane lamps sorted and fitted with an SMD LED for each.

Image

Just for mood lighting than room lighting so they will do.
Fitted to the wall parts so them be complete.

Image

A bit on the bodywork now and the moulded on windshield wipers will have to go.
Some gentle grinding/filing/chisel/wet sanding violence later and 'twas a done thingy.

Image

Image

Now for the wipers.
Hunted down some pics of period wipers and did up a mesh.

Image

Now they sit somewhat above the windshield seal like so...

Image

I see no point to doing different so a printed off a pair with some spares later, test fit look see.

Image

Image

That'll do!

The exhaust stacks got a looking at.
Used the bottom pipe part of the stock ones with my 3D printed replacements and some 4mm aluminium tube.

Image

Image

Looks a bit better than the stock ones.
The replacements destined for the Alclad chrome treatment.

Image

The cab roof has air horns mounted.
The stock part and dry fit look see.

Image

Image

Yeah...right...
Mesh made up and printed replacements.

Image

Drilled out holes in the roof for the marker lights.

Image

A fair amount of time and 19 SMD LEDs fitted.
The large white rectangle is an LED panel light for the interior.

Image

Wired up the battery pack and...

Image

Image

Image

Now this is a 70's van so a bead curtain will have to figure somewhere in it.
A couple of hours pushing surface and polygons about got an acceptable mesh.

Image

On the printer, done and removed the support material.

Image

A bit of paint, drybrush dabbling, a length of cord and matt varnish later got it done.

Image

More to come as always!

Cheers muchly Al!
And here's more...

Assembled the tape deck and sink/counter setup.

Image

One part of the dividing wall attached.

Image

Speaker for the MP3 player tested and installed.

Image

Bed and tape deck/counter thing placed.

Image

Image

Body shell fitted with the passenger side internal door in place and body attached to chassis.
A quick look with the sliding door in place.

Image

Image

Side walls for the bed area fitted in, other dividing wall part likewise..

Image

Image

Image

Now to the chrome parts.
Chrome all stripped thanks to a tub full of bleach, cleaned and ready.

So Alclad time and at some point in the past, my solitary bottle of chrome must have had some aluminium or the like mixed in with it.
Upshot is that after the gloss black coat, they came out looking a more steel colour.

I'll level with you here and say it's not upsetting my Zen thing and kinda diggin' the look so cool...man.

Also did some black shade wash before the two coats of Alclad Klear Kote.
Well that's how it's spelt on the bottle.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Now for the licence plate.
My 1/12th Camaro has California plates so a little something different.

Did a bit of digging and found out that a company by the name of Gerring is one of the largest mobs
doing custom van conversions since the early 70's in Elkridge, Indiana.

Good enough for me so went hunting on the net and found a photo of a vintage plate.

Image

More than good enough so a bit of photo fiddling about got some usable tiny DIY waterslide decals
and a bit of mesh messing about and 3D printing got the plates.

A few dabs of paint and a bit of fiddling about got it done.

Image

Image

Plates installed, front grille and rear bumper taken care of.

Image

Image

Lastly, a quick Youtube vid of a rough setup for the reel to reel and tie in MP3 player.

https://youtu.be/kKR-LKl_PRI

Done and done for now.
More when I get the chance :D

First, the wipers, the horns, and the curtains look amazing. Man, you are pretty good with the designing and printing.

The lighting is also way beyond my skills. I cannot imagine working that small.

Seeing it all coming together is really cool, and mind blowing how real it all looks when it is together.

And that tape player.
What can I say?

Cheers muchly Trev!
Sometimes it all works out mate, not that a healthy dose of 'I'll make it work one way or another' doesn't help :D

I thank ya Steve, the devil is in the details as they say and got a van full of little devils right here!

Onward with the mayhem...
Headlight LEDs resistored up, wired up and tested.

Image

Roof paintwork sorted out.
Tamiya rattle can silver for the back, dull red for the front.
Front end got six airbrush coats of red pearlescent lacquer then the whole lot got four coats of Alclad Aqua Gloss.

I was waiting on a pack of orange lenses to arrive but there seems
to be a delay so went ahead and did them myself.
3D printed blank pushed in to Blu-Tack, UV curing resin dripped in,
Cured, pulled, cleaned up and painted.

Stock covers for the front lights given a couple of coats of Tamiya clear orange and installed.
Other lenses likewise and air horns fitted.

Image

The inevitable lights on look see.

Image

Speaking of lights, the interior needed a bit of that.
Ceiling panel done and fitted with a single LED back light module.

Image

Resistors set in.
The three will run the light panel and hurricane lamps,
the two will run the rear lights and be tied to the roof marker lights circuit.

Image

The dry fit lights off/on test pic of course.

Image

Needed a bit more work so to make it look like fluorescent strip lighting,
A smudged pencil line and a going over with some airbrushed Tamiya clear yellow.

Image

A couple of 3D printed additions bought off CGTrader also got a looking at.
After a bit of scaling and print pandemonium, done and just removed from the support material.
Clean up and paint will come later,
here's one...

Image

And she will go just nicely on the bed in the van.

Image

Works for me and so does she.

Image

So main exterior paint now.
Same silver/dull red/pearl deal and a some masking here and there.

Image

Image

So to the decal thing.
Well my heroism has it's limits and 45 year old decal sheets are a bit beyond that.

Original scanned, redrawn and laser printed on to white decal paper.

Image

More fun to be had on the next post!
:)

OK, next round of fun, sun and...something.
Okedoke then, decal application done and none too great in places but it is what it is.

Image

Image

A bit of corrective paintwork here and there, gloss coats done, masking ripped off, windows cleaned,
rear light covers given a couple of coats of clear red, fitted, front grille and rear bumper in place.

Image

Image

Final interior detail bits.

What road trip wouldn't be complete without the junk food.
Styrene core with cover printed on self adhesive label paper and the box o' Twinkies done.

Image

Road map book.
Ever useful to know where you're going to or at least,
have a more precise estimate of how lost you are.

Same printing on self adhesive label paper for the cover,
pages done by stacking and trimming tissue paper after wrapping.

Image

Twinkies strategically placed for the 'drive by' snack swiping.
Map book on passenger seat.

Image

Image

Bead curtain in place and rear light test look see.

Image

Image

Now to the tyres.
Cleaned up and tread given a sanding down to get shot of the moulding line.

Image

The mounting this bad motor scooter to the base is an issue so that solved.

Some 3d printing took place and 4 nuggets sorted with captive nuts.
A second hole for the wiring run built in.

Image

Image

Holes punched it what will be the bottom for the bolt and wires.

Image

Now these fit as per the pic and when the bolts are tightened,
it should impart a little bit of a flat area where the rubber meets the road to simulate weight.

Image

Image

One fitted up.

Image

Image

All four sorted.

Image

Image

Windshield wipers, steps, fuel tanks, grab handles, door handles and air cleaners fitted.

Image

Image

Image

And that'll do it for this update.
More to come as soon as i've done it

This is sheer insanity. The level of detail you've gone into - and the 100% realism of the tiny pieces (road map, drinks, license plates, etc.) just blows me away.

I really like how you sorted the mounting issue.
Kills two birds with one stone. Secures it to the base, and gives the tires that realistic flattening on the bottom.

I'll be honest. My eyes kind of glazed over with all the painting and lighting. I just know it looks pretty damn cool.

Al, i'll not argue with that assesment in any way...oh hang on, did you mean the build or the builder? Just askin'

Thanks Trev, it actually worked out so all good mate!
You are not alone with the eye glazing issue, mine do that on a regular basis when I start thinking 'What's next?'

Well now, it's the final update so let's be about it!

Took care of the printed figures,
First one is the lass that will be leaning against the van.

All Vallejo paints for the colours except for some Tamiya black panel line accent wash.
Skin tones with a burnt umber base and worked up with the same and a drop or two of standard flesh tone.
Coveralls in royal blue, black washed and then drybrushed up with andrea blue and sky blue.

The 'Ace Trucking' logo on the back is a nod to the story of 'Ace Trucking Co. Any space, any time' in the old 2000AD weekly comic I was fond of.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Bikini girl also sorted.

Tamiya rattlecan flesh base, pastel chalks for shading, drybrush using Vallejo air light flesh.
The rest of the paint was Vallejo along with Gunze Sangyo carmine red for the bikini.

Image

Image

Image

That bit done and dusted, base work time.

Keeping it simple, 12mm MDF sliced up and then nailed back together in a different form.
Some drilling, filling and sanding got the box required, some no-brand ground scatter got from a local war
gaming shop was laid down and also got a first use with one of those static grass things.

Idea is that you lay down the glue and load this hand held thing up with whatever grass you want to use.
Looks like this...

Image

Use a pin in the clip on the end of the lead to make contact with the wet glue, switch on then sprinkle away.
The grass fibers end up static charged and stand up straight in the glue.

So much fiddling about and a bit of messy work but it was sorted.

Image

Image

Image

Looks the part so excellent and onward!

When the base work was done, I had a feeling it needed just a little something extra.
Something to get a sorta summertime vibe going...

DAISIES

Yeah, that the answer...

A hole punch and some ordinary copier paper got a disc.

Image

Using the tooth pick to hold it down and the scalpel to merrily slice away gets a start.

Several more of differing size added to the lot.

Image

Image

Some mild steel wire,
mucho tiny drops of super glue,
a few dabs of paint/shade and I got what I wanted.

Image

Image

Some wire slicing and dipping in to a drop of PVA glue got them in place.

Image

Sorted!
Switch plate now.
2mm styrene, Tamiya rattlecan silver and some DIY waterslides got the job done.
Switches fitted, in place and battery box drawer likewise.

Image

Image

Image

Van bolted to base, tyre flatteners did their job.

Image

Image

Wired up.
Had to use a double supply as couldn't find a voltage dropping buck for the MP3 player.
Also will admit I couldn't be bothered to get the components to make one so it is what it is and I shall live with it.

Bottom plate sorted, 3mm hardboard with 3mm neoprene foam to stop it sliding about on my glass shelves
when I have a play with the switches which is guaranteed to happen.
Cutouts for the MP3 players batteries and so I can get to the micro-SD card to change the play list should I wish...
and I probably will.

Roof wired up and fitted.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Interior lights test.

Image

Image

Side mirrors, exhaust stacks and large antenna in place.

Image

Image

The very last parts to be attached.

Image

And that's it for the build!

Calling this a double anniversary thing.

First, crossing this off the 'Made a bloody mess of the first build years ago, try to do better this time' list
and methinks I may have got a bit closer to what I originally wanted.

Second, this year of 2022 marks 50 years since I built my first injection moulded kit.
For the trivia dept, it was the Airfix 1/72nd Bolton Paul Defiant,
bagged kit in black plastic with the instructions stapled to the top of the bag.

Hope you've enjoyed the ride along on thus build, gallery proper to come as soon as i've sorted it.

Pretty sure he meant both 8)

You just gloss right over how nicely you finished those figures.
They turned out great, and I can't wait to see pics of them in place with the van.

That static grass turned out well. One of these days I will take my base-making to that level.
And those daisies are a perfect touch.

And that switch plate is genious! Looks factory made.

The whole thing looks great. Can't wait for the beauty shots.
