DeAgostinin 1/18th Scale X-Wing Fighter Partwork Sort Of WIP

Greetings all!
Not a full WIP as such, there are more than just a few build blogs/vlogs out there of the whole deal.
This is covering the mods i'm doing to this one, with a bit of assembly hoo-ha here and there. Client build by the way.

So to business...
At this time of keyboard pounding, I have all the assembly work done.
Next task is the surface clear up/detailing and full repaint.
Measures 29 & 1/4" or 718mm long.

But stepping back to when I had up to issue 55 of this bad motor scooter, it started with the top engine detailing.

This is the engine just assembled as stock.



Could use a little extra here and there so it was done.





The covers also needed a bit of work so the engine detail can be seen. So panels chopped off and new ones 3D printed, magnetically attached.





Both exterior and interior got some work done.





Interior paint and dirt done.



Put together for a look see.





At this point, I had enough parts to assemble three of the wings.







The laser cannons had LEDs and fiberoptic supplied but the FO that DeAgo sent was rubbish so the got replaced.
Sheathed decent quality 2mm FO got fitted on and tested.





All good thusfar.
So three wings, the cannon barrels, nose and front fuselage frame dealt with.



After a brief spell of no deliveries, got enough parts together to get all four wings done, detailed the other top wing engine
the same as the first and get the guts of the thing all together.
Lighting and wing open/close tested out and found to be okedoke.











Did the R2 unit up as well, some extra paint and wash didn't go amiss.
He's fitted with a LED as standard and the head will connect to the supplied motor drive to rotate it.



So that got me a fair way in but there was a break due to logistical problems, the lockdown, brexit etc. and so on ad absurdum.

So with the above lot sorted and the long wait for new delivers over with, leaping ahead more than a few months got me to the next pile of bits.



Some part assembly with a little bit of paint and plenty of dirt weathering to the internal detail removable parts.
No idea if ther client really want's these but part of the deal and a paint/weathring excercise so all good.

Something the magazine blurb called the acceleration compensator...I just call it a 'thingy'

The proton torpedo rack.



Magnetically attached here.





Droid strip and hyperdrive looks like this. Oh the strip has been painted in Tamya AS-20 Insignia White.
That will be the base colour for the repaint.





In place and magnetic/slot secured cover on.





Stock coockpit is just pretty poor so got the Falcon 3D Parts upgrade and pilot figure for it and it's very well detailed.









So removed the main cockpit part from the support material, cleaned up and photo etch attached.





Flat black base and several coats in varying shades of grey, dry brushed on.





Panel decals in place.

Onward!

Screens in the front just had a clear part but me being me...
A couple of decals drawn and printed, the clear bit shaved down in thickness just a smidge and it was done.



Fitted and a LED torch assited look see.





Upgrade supplied and stock cockpit greeblies painted and attached.





Pilot figure cleaned up and ready for paint.



Paint was done!
Helmet decals came with the upgrade set I am thankful to say.
Added the helmet mike and wire.







Joystick sorted and figure in seat.



Stock cockpit lighting setup wasn't great.



So did some lightboxing on the cockpit main part.



The LEDs are supposed to shine directly up which caused hot spots, a no-no in my book, so the lightbox gig made then shine mostly indirect or at a distance from the panels.
The directions as indicated by the red arrows.



Much better even lighting over the whole thing.



Because of the light boxing, some lump removal from the cockpit bucket required.

Cockpit canopy hydraulic rams added.



Time for the dry fit dress rehersal of the cockpit.









Yep!
Stock canopy ram arms fitted and they work just nicely.





The last of the parts arrived so fuselage plating, greeblies and push fit landing gear built/fitted as appropriate.
A look round as it were.

Well things are still a going on, started on the front fuselage reworking.
The front fuz 'as is'



Some wet sanding after the Aves filling the panel gaps had cured. A bit of scribing and then plenty of Sheet styrene chips and bits got thrown at it.
Along with shallow drill holes for plating fasteners.





Used the big 5 foot X-Wing model built for ROTJ as inspiration for the detailing and that's as good as any.





The inevitable and necessary primer for a look see.







A half decent start methinks, time to wind this lark out to the rest of the thing.

A small bit of modding on the stock switch and stand cover.
Made a hole for the yet to be made 'In flight' stand and detailed it up a bit, added the cut out notches which the studio X-Wings sem to have..



Scratchbuilt another cover plate from heat formed styrene. This is for the 'gear down' version should it be required.
Mangetically attached like the stock plate.

And there's more!

A bit of surface detail to deal with. The five raised circular thingies.



Studio Model here. You can see the two brass/gold things, they were the power sockets for the models.



A quick mesh and print whipped up. Not strictly accurate but they'll do for this gig.



Offending lumps removed.



Replacements fitted. Decided to do things a little different because why not.



Did the ones on the other side a straight swap and they will do.



A bit of masking and a coat of primer/surface fault finder done.



A few putty messups to take care of but not too shabby.







Did the drill shallow holes to represent panel fixing like thingies on all the wings.



A quick squirt of primer to the cover plate and like what i'm seeing overall.



More on this a bit later.

Well got to where I wanted it to be at days end.
White-ish coats applied so now that can cure fully overnight.















So the different coloured panels up next, always a laugh riot.

OK then, short order update.
Multi colour panels and Red Squadron markings done via various Tamiya rattlecans and Vallejo acrylics.





Heavily thinned enamel dark grey paint for the panel wash.
Applied, let mostly dry then thinners dampened cloth wipedown. Went a bit heavy with the rubdown in certain places for the start of the paint wear.







Some stencil decals made up. Had an Aruebesh font so why not.







That done, time to make a mess of the paintwork for the weathering start. Some german grey splotches for small hits here and there.
Combo of wet and dry grit paper used both ways, some small chisel end scraping and the odd scratch of a scalpel blade where appropriate.





Ground pastel chalks and graphite powder for the first layer going on.
The underside of the fuselage and one wing done.



Same deal extended to the whole underside.



Top side got the same kind of treatment.



A few touchups here and there which made up the second and third layers of the weathering but done enough.
As a basic run not too bad but there will be adjustments as per clients wishes.

Onward with more bits!
Gave the landing gear a looing at. No idea if the client actually want's it but a paintwork excersise if nothing else.
Main gear piece as is.



Some seam filing, a splash of dark grey, dark wash, light grey drydrushing and a lick of silver later get's this.



Same deal for all three.



A repaint of the supplied nose gear doors and a fit look see required.





Dry fit dress rehersal time methinks.





So far, so good.
Painted the insides of the removable engine panels.





R2 sits way too high and the canopy will require some work, this is how things look just as is.



Now non opening canopy was requested so it shall be done.
After only a small amount of work and some 5thou" clear styrene as the supplied glazing is rubbish, here's what we got.



Somewhat of an improvement.
Expected and requested weathering changes also made.





Some excess dirt/wear spread about and to the mans satisfaction.





Last bits and pieces to sort coming up next!

Last bits!
Stand sortout now.

Lump of 20mm diameter brass barstock got a spin in my lathe. Used an 8mm bolt in the top, threaded the brass and ran it down nice and snug.
Chopped the top off the bolt and cleaned up.





Base is just 12mm thick MDF lumps glued and screwed together.
First of many coats of black on it.



Had to have a look.





Yep, liking it!

Stand embellishment, a plaque.
A bit of polygon pushing about got this render.



Printed, clened up and painted. Primered, matt black base, dry brushed copper then the same with some silver in it.









And in place. The stand got a bit of self adhesive aluminium foil prettying up.



Final job to seat R2 properly.
Had to remove the poor fellas feet.



He was originally supposed to be removable but client said not required so a bit more hacking and hardwiring the dome LED in and the fella was sitting as he should.





Looks better.
And that's it, a done deal and thumbs up from the man so all good!
