Monarch "The Fly" plastic dye problem
Yikes! I sprayed a gloss coating over the machine, and the damn bright red dye of the plastic seeped through the acrylic paint job
Here's the stuff I used:
Ya know, when I opened the box and saw all the bright colors the kit was molded in, I thought "Great. That'll be tough to prime." But I never thought THIS would happen.
Hey Monarch, it's OK to just cast things in medium grey. We don't need the bright colors....
P.S. I've used this spray for years. The problem here is the deep, deep saturation of the color embedded in the plastic. If you think of it as ink, there's a LOT of ink in this plastic to make its color that saturated.

I might be the spray.. maybe too aggressive of sealer for plastic.
I just dull coat or glosscoat. or a acrylic sealer.

Had the same thing happen on the Monarch Nosferatu kit. So frustrating.

A few questions:
1. Did you prime, paint and then gloss?
2. Did the problem occur only after using the Rust-oleum Gloss Clear?
3. What brand(s) of primer and paint did you use?

I've been watching this thread hoping to hear it wasn't the plastic. But, IS it the plastic? I've never heard of paint causing bleed through of color.

It's probably the sealer and plastic causing reaction that..

Re: Monarch "The Fly" plastic dye problem
Tim, did you primer coat your model before painting?
I've never encountered this, but I spray primer everything on a kit before any base coats are applied.
That's weird, but I've never used Rustoleum products. I only use primers/paints that are exclusive to styrene models.

Re: Monarch "The Fly" plastic dye problem
Having been in the injection molding business for some 30 years, I am speculating this could be caused by the mold release spray used to eliminate sticking of the parts in the mold when ejecting them.
There are several types of mold release. Some are paintable and some are not. I have even seen WD40 (which will break down styrene) used as a mold release.
Since Monarch's kits are molded in China, who knows what is being used.
My recommendation is to wash all injection molded kit parts in warm (not hot) water with dish soap, rinse thoroughly and wipe down with Isopropyl Alcohol before spraying with primer.

The paint is Delta Ceramcoat Acrylic.[/quote]
It appears that problems involving the use of Rust-oleum products and this kit are not unique. Below is the link to a Youtube video (start at the 5:00 mark) albeit not the same problem, it is the same kit and Rus-toleum.

I'd like to see someone do up this kit: washing it about 4 or 5 times; and then use only Tamiya or only Vallejo products - no aerosol - and observe the results.

Re: Monarch "The Fly" plastic dye problem
Good to know. I just posted my review of this awesome kit! I always use the cheap gray primer from Dol-Gen. Never had a problem with it . But again this is good to know because outside of glow parts I've never seen a kit in so many colors.
Looking forward to your worx cuz this kit is waaaay cool!

There are Acrylic primers there expensive but safe on on all kits

Re: Monarch "The Fly" plastic dye problem
Just to re-iterate, I've used this primer for quite awhile, including using it on styrene kits with absolutely no problem. It's the gloss coating that caused the problem. The rest of the kit - the non-gloss pieces - are doing fine.
The gist of the story is don't use this gloss spray on this kit. And cleaning it with alcohol is probably a good idea - lord knows what's used in the factories of China.

Re: Monarch "The Fly" plastic dye problem
I've never been a fan of the Rustoleum clear. Too thick for my taste.
I prefer to use the Krylon. It's harder to find and a little more expensive than Rustoleum, but a whole lot cheaper than Dullcote.
Which, I still use for the final clear. But the Krylon works great for steps along the way.
And for the past 20+ years I have never used a hobby primer. My go-to has always been the cheap K-mart house brand spray primers.
Almost out of it now, so I need to find a new one. I know it won't be Rustoleum though. Their primer comes out way too fast with zero control or finesse. Probably Duplicolor. Though I did finally get one of the hobby primers to try in my airbrush. Vallejo.

I agree, but I stand waaay back when I use it! I probably lose more than I use.
I like the way my paints take to it, though.
