1/12 Horta from Star Trek
I've been wanting a 1/12 Horta to go with my AMT Spock snakes kit.
Surprisingly I could not find a garage kit of her. I decided to have a go at her myself.
My 1st thought was sculpting one, but I think it's beyond my skills as a sculptor.
My next thought was vac-u-forming. After much consideration I settled on aluminum foil as a master.
From Screen caps the Horta looks roughly rectangular, not circular.
After a bit of trial and error I came up with this:
1st, and only pull. The form gets destroyed removing it.
Primed, painted, and dusted with baking soda.
Some sculpting putty to make the lava tubes:

Some flat yellow on the lava tubes:
Then gloss yellow on the lava tubes and some detail green on her skin. Spock for scale with some of my other tests.
Some red tinted epoxy for some surface depth, and the wound.
And some red highlights on the lava tubes:

Re: 1/12 Horta from Star Trek
Looks really great, but don't forget the tassels around the bottom perimeter. She looked like an area rug at times. You're right about her looking rectangular. There was someone on their hands and knees underneath the Horta costume witch gave it the rectangle look. Other times she was more round.
Did you use some sort of a figurine with a lions face on it under the foil? I don't if it's just me but I think I see a lions face?

Thanks!
I've never noticed it, but one segment does look like a lions head. It was not on purpose, but I like it.
A momma Horta needs some eggs, and she got a rust wash to blend things:
I still need to put the shaggy tassels on her.

Life got in the way, but I finally got the shaggy bits on her.
I made up extras of the shaggies in case I want to add more, but I think it looks good for now.
Up next, the Kirk and Spock figures.
I thought I had posted this earlier. I Made some wall/backdrops for an eventual diorama, with some extra eggs.

Re: 1/12 Horta from Star Trek
So I'm expanding this build a bit.
I have a night owl models StarFleet 1st officer conversion kit that converts the AMT Spock to a standing position.
I also have a JT Graphics Kirk head/hands.
I'm thinking I want to build a standing Kirk holding a phaser on the Horta while Spock Starts his mind meld.
So 2 AMT Spock kits, 1 Kirk resin head/hands and 1 Spock resin standing conversion going in.
Here are the Spock..err Kirk parts.
The main issue is Leonard Nimoy was 6 ft tall, William Shatner is 5 ft 10.
Kirk looks way off, 1/8 inch needs to come off. The easiest way (though not the best) way is to remove it below the shirt line.
This is what I did.
Cutting below the shirt line with an xacto saw.
Marked off 1/8 inch.
I sanded away the 1/8 inch and glued things back together. Glued, filled, and sanded.
.
Here is Kirk dry stacked:
Primed and painted flat black:

Ah yes, the ole shag carpet detail. That looks even better! This is going to be an interesting diorama I think. Will be watching with interest.
