Look at what came today! VAMPIRELLA from XPlus

#1 Post by Stewart Jackson »

I've been thrilled for the release of this since first announced and anticipation has now turned to satisfaction. Big Bad Toy Store had them in stock and ready to go and they shipped it super fast. I still have one on preorder with Cult TV Man so I can have a mint untouched one as well as one I'll build.

Love the kit! While it is tough to see in my quick pics, it is wonderfully molded. This is a high quality release and the instructions have that Aurora feel that makes my kit nostalgia glow all warm and stuff. Very highly recommended!!

That would be nuts. BBTS was pricer than Cult TV Man, but BBTS was charging a flat $4.00 for shipping for a total of $63.00 complete. and I wanted to be sure I had it in my feverish little hands.

I don't think you are going to find any really cheap deals.
X-plus has a habit underproducing and leaving the market wanting more.

Hey Paul:

She's 1/8, so Aurora scale. Well worth every penny!

I find it interesting that over the past years we've seen more and more limited release plastic kits. Is there some new technology that has sharply reduced the price of injection mold making?

I think a big reason is 3D printed tooling.
It doesn't last as long, and isn't nearly as sturdy, bit it does work and is cheap enough to work well for small run projects like styrene kits.

Probably a combination of 3d printing and CnC machining. Back in the late 80’s I used to work as a pantograph operator for a certain toy company and the die making process was much more labor intensive. ( What the heck is a pantograph? It’ a series of linked arms with a stylus on one end and a cutter on the other. By running the stylus over a pattern, the cutter on the other end would produce the cavity that would become the negative half of the mold. This process was used mostly on vehicles and hardware models. A different less expensive electroplating process was used on figures. CnC machining has taken over manually producing the dies.)

Just snagged one on eBay UK! £53 including postage (about $69?) which I thought was reasonable.
I have no Vampirella models in my collection and this looks a nicely designed kit, so having seen Stuart's review
and this one on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8A4qMdVx6OM I was impressed enough and went for it.
Birthday next week so that's another good excuse! :D

Cheers,
Paul
