DVD going away?

#1 Post by starmanmm »

I'm hearing that sales of DVD's are going down due to streaming, etc.

If that's true, then anyone selling their collection maybe out of luck.

Thougths?

I've been slowly fazing everything out. Even bluray. Everything's on my computer now and I have some space in the living room now. I play everything through Roku, Xbox one and Plex.

If they end, it'll be almost as premature as the industry's murder of vinyl. There are still millions of us who don't have constant, limitless digital access, nor the desire to piss away hundreds of dollars every month for data and streaming services.

It's expensive for anyone, but especially so for those of us who live in rural areas.

DVD still outnumbers Blu-Ray at my area stores. Ironically, I saw vinyl albums on the shelves of both Target and Walmart in the past month.

Just realized that my response above doesn't properly address the initial question. Sorry, I misread based on assumptions.

This, for me, is a good time to pick up DVDs inexpensively, just like 15 years ago I was grabbing cheap videotapes that I did get my money's worth from. As indicated above, I almost never stream full movies online, it'd eat up my monthly bandwidth in a day. Satellite stinks!

It's possible, down the road, that I'll switch to streaming if everything I want is easily available online, but the increasing number of streaming services -- with a cost for each one -- I doubt I'd ever be happy with it. I mean, I watch one or two movies a week and nothing else. It's never going to be worth it to me to subscribe to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, CBS All Access, Shudder and whatever else is vying for my attention.

I hope it isn't going away.
TV shows and movies I like, I like to own physical copies of.
Yeah, sure, streaming is great, and doesn't take up any space, but what happens when your favorite show isn't on Netfilx anymore? Or your internet is down, how you gonna watch that show now?

The answer is that you save a digital copy on your computer drive (and also on an external drive). It gives you a physical copy, but it takes up a lot less space .... and as always - backup, backup, backup all of your digital files ...

I don't know how to do that. I am guessing there are programs out there to help you do that?

Tried it... was missing the commercials.

Still, been wondering if now is the time to start selling what I have. Like many of us, I started off with video tape, laser disks, dvd's then blue rays. Only so much I can do. Not sure if there's even a market for them these days.

This from the guy who started 10 of the threads on the first page of this forum and NONE in the Reading Room.

But for what it's worth, I'm reading World War Z for at least the fifth time. More in the wings but I've misplaced my Kindle, dammit!

I've moved on to re-reading The Haunting of Hill House. Had to get the bad taste of the Netflix series (which I bought on DVD, so I'm not TOTALLY derailing this thread) out of my mouth.

Well, I don't know - Blue-Ray DVDs* are so good - can digital streaming ever be THAT sharp? Some day maybe - but not for now.

*Keeping the thread on-topic

I've transferred most of my DVD's and BluRays to a couple of external drives, but I'm still keeping all my disks as backups. While I don't buy many DVD's I still buy Blurays, though mostly steelbooks or special editions and lots of blurays come with a dvd and digital copies. My biggest peeve about streaming are titles disappearing, I was halfway thru the Larry Sanders show when Netflix dropped the show and left me hanging.
