Sidney Poitier passes aged 94

#1 Post by Heavy Metal Spike »

.

I can't say I followed his entire career, but I remember being shown "To Sir, With Love" at a school special "end of term" assembly back when I was 11 or 12 (along with Dean Martin's "The Silencers" - what an entertaining double bill for an all-boys school!)

It had a real impact on me because of the title song, the story, and the quality of the acting . . . everyone was superb . . . particularly Sidney as the male lead. Still love the movie to this day.

"In The Heat Of The Night" (released the same year - 1967) was another great watch.

The man had a definite screen "presence" - poised, classy, brooding . . . haunting even . . . and very charismatic.

Strangely enough I was watching "The Long Ships" Thursday night. Mere hours later he passed. That's weird. :?

I'd never heard of the film - but that clip is quite disturbing (Poitier's accent is somewhat appropriate - Widmark's not so much :) )

Plus the victim would fall off the side of the blade after the first few feet. Still - the imagery is pretty savage!

I believe the clip was edited for tv because it showed the victim did slide along the blade for a moment. Also notice the victim is gone and there's some blood on the spike platform after. This was a cheesy viking movie from 1963. I remember watching it with my dad. I was born in 63 so I was probably around four years. But yeah, the gruesome imagery stuck in my mind for a long time until someone here in the CH told me the name of the movie. 8)

in '83, our ship pulled into Trieste, Italy and a bunch of us went over to visit
Venice and take in the sights.

As we were eating lunch in an outdoor cafe, who walks up to us bcuz he heard
folks speaking English, was Mr. Poitier!!

Spent about 20 minutes before he had to rush off... but was great meeting this
great actor!!

My friend Abbie took this photo and then for, like a month, bitched that he should
have given us the camera so HE could be the one posing next to him!! :)
