Helena is here at hand;
And the youth, mistook by me,
Pleading for a lover's fee.
Shall we their fond pageant see?
Lord, what fools these mortals be! -Puck

Thanks for the heads-up bud - I'll wait to hear feedback from yourself & a few others before I risk wasting my time and adding to my "I hate Kurtzman because" list though.LOBOREX wrote:https://youtu.be/WmumGjQanZs

Re: Star Trek strange new worlds 1st episode free here
I've watched the first two episode and liked both.
Solid cast and stories so far and I quite like Capt. Pike.
Ian, if you have Crave (CTV - in Canada) you can watch free of charge - no need to subscribe to an additional channel.

Thanks Derek - the subscription wasn't the issue - it was the concern over ADDITIONAL self-inflicted mental distress by exposing myself FURTHER to a franchise that nowadays (quite frankly) SUCKS!derekc62 wrote:I've watched the first two episode and liked both.

How (either of you . . . or anyone else that has watched) would you say it compares to seasons 1 & 2 of Discovery or season 1 of Picard ? (I gave in after those).

I bailed after season one of Discovery and found I was forcing myself to even finish that season. Had a pretty intense dislike for most of the characters and the was not a fan at all of the main character's back-story.Heavy Metal Spike wrote:Thanks Derek - the subscription wasn't the issue - it was the concern over ADDITIONAL self-inflicted mental distress by exposing myself FURTHER to a franchise that nowadays (quite frankly) SUCKS!derekc62 wrote:I've watched the first two episode and liked both.

As for Picard - didn't care much for Season One (watched for old time's sake), Season Two was better.
Now, ST:SNW is better by far than either of those shows (IMHO)

Right - sounds like we had similar opinions then.derekc62 wrote:I bailed after season one of Discovery and found I was forcing myself to even finish that season. Had a pretty intense dislike for most of the characters and the was not a fan at all of the main character's back-story.

For me - the plots for "Discovery" (S01/S02) were dodgy/insulting/boring and they kept killing off or writing out the good actors/characters - leaving all the crap.
"Picard" season 1 had its moments, but turned into a hot mess by the end.
Based on the feedback here so far, I'll give ST-SNW a try.
Thanks all (fingers crossed)

Re: Star Trek strange new worlds 1st episode free here
.
I watched the 1st episode.
The tactful version I remember how bad TNG started off - and ultimately quite enjoyed THAT as it progressed. I also remember not being impressed by "The Orville" when it first started - and NOW think that is better than anything that's come out of the Star Trek franchise in over 23 years (since DS9 ended in 1999). So - I'll watch the 2nd episode to see if it gets better.
The not-so-tactful-version Damn that was bad. The single - yeah - SINGLE decent actor on the screen was Anson Mount (echoes that god-awful "Inhumans" series!) I got chills pretty much every time his pronunciation reminded me of Shatner's vocalisations. If I were to list all the things that bugged me about this (like "plot", acting, casting, script - the list goes on), I'd be typing for the next half-hour - and none of us need that. I'll go for a couple though:
Off to get E02 out of the way before it gets too close to my bedtime - I don't need nightmares! (those are best reserved for Anson Mount's agent and Paramount shareholders).

I'll go for a couple though:
- 1) The next time I look at the sun, I really need to be more observant. That way it'll allow me to reverse-engineer how to build a nuclear reactor - it'll cut down on our gas & hydro bills.
2) Not quite sure why the nurse can transform other peoples faces but can't manage to dye her own eyebrows the same colour as her hair.
3) Could they have chosen someone less suitable to play a young Uhura? (I dunno - maybe if they had race-swapped the character?) - Nichelle Nichols was (is) a goddess. This actress - not so much - I've seen more screen presence on insects that collide with my car.
4) As with "Discovery" - some of the characters seemed to have been "less than organically" placed - almost like showrunners had to tick certain boxes.

And so to E02 thank goodness Uhura was there - it's not like they have universal translators. Oh - wait . . .
They SO should have played Motörhead to the comet - would have sorted everything out (I'm thinking "Rock It", "Rock Out", or "Please Don't Touch" would have been appropriate for those of us that use bad puns).
Per my post at the top of the thread, "I hate Kurtzman because . . . " he & his hires continue to ruin a franchise I used to love.
K - I gave it a shot - and thanks again for your feedback - but I'm out. I'll leave the thread to those of you that want to continue watching and obviously sincerely hope you do continue to enjoy this.
I'll end with a quote that cropped up 3 times in E02 - "Sometimes things go so badly you just have to laugh"

Re: Star Trek strange new worlds 1st episode free here
I stopped watching Discovery midway through S1. Hated the look, hated the characters, hated the stories. Might be int he ST universe, but didn't feel like ST. I don't really care for the new movies either.
I watched S1 of Picard, liked the beginning lost interest by the end. I did not watch S2.
I did enjoy STSNW ep1 (and 2), felt more like ST than Discovery, Picard, or the new movies. I then found out SNW is a spin-off of Discovery S2. Made me want to see S2 (absolutely no interest in revisiting S1). I've watched 4 eps of S2 so far, 2 good, 1 meh, 1 bad (in that order). Still don't like the Discovery characters. Will stop watching them if they don't pick back up.
I'd say give it a shot, it's better than anything we've gotten from them in the past few decades.
One problem (spoiler I guess)
La'an Noonien Singh. Isn't this going to be a problem when Spock meets Kahn in 10 years? The version of Spock is apparently very forgetful since he never mentions he had a human sister, nor remembers a former member of the bridge crew when they meet someone with almost the same name.

After other folks pointed out episodes 1,2 and 8 of season 1 were the ones to avoid, and the other episodes were great - I was remotivated, watched the rest of the season, and REALLY enjoyed it.
Anson Mount is PERFECT for the role (he was one of the few decent things in Discovery) - brilliant casting.
Trailer for season 2 has just been uploaded - chills! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJYPXuM-3JA
Just 3 weeks to go (June 15th 2023)

S02E01 - "The Broken Circle"
OMG - superb episode
A GREAT new addition to the team (the delightfully quirky Carol Kane), and perfect performances from all the returning cast (they are SO much more comfortable & confident in their roles now) - I think my TNG comparison has turned out to be quite appropriate.
Emotional and enthralling - and DOUBLE chills at the end of the episode.
What an amazing start to the season.
Between STW and the 3rd season of Picard - I couldn't be happier at the massive course correction the franchise has taken.
THIS (below) brought tears to my eyes.

I think it's time for that trip to the docs Vlad - anyone that appreciates my sense-of-humour is in dire need of some sort of medical intervention
You'll LOVE "Picard" Season 3 - and most of "Strange New Worlds" too (likely excepting S01E08 and perhaps S01E01 & S01E02 as mentioned above).

S02E02 - "Ad Astra per Aspera"
Another first-class entry
I was reminded of that classic TNG episode "The Drumhead" (S04E21), along with that oft-repeated proverb "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely".
Both of those, along with this SNW episode, are very timely, relevant, and appropriate given the increasingly obvious corruption in societies these days.
Beautifully written, directed, acted and shared . . . emotional, but with a superb laugh-out-loud moment: ("An affinity for Gilbert & Sullivan musicals")
Kudos to everyone involved.

S02E03 - "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"
A little slow in places, but interesting nonetheless.
The lass that plays the Enterprise's Chief Security officer (one Christina Chong as La'an Noonien-Singh) is one heck of an actress.
Bonus in this weeks episode for Buc & Vlad plenty of expensive-looking furniture in almost EVERY scene
