Just curious what you folks consider the 'roots' of metal music. I believe it's roots are in Iron Butterfly, Vanilla Fudge and Frijid Pink.

Re: Roots of Metal?
I think Deep Purple is in there also and Sabbath without a doubt.

Re: Roots of Metal?
If you are talking "roots " of metal ,there are various bands that had the sound down
Take for instance Helter Skelter by the Beatles .The Beatles are not a heavy metal band but I consider the song at the time heavier than anything out there.Same with Purple Haze.
Beck put out an album called Truth that was metal sounding but again not a metal guy
As bands I think Sabbath hands down blew it away

Re: Roots of Metal?
I agree with Black Sabbath- their signature guitar sound influenced Metal as we know it now.

Black Sabbath of course comes to mind and a band that I think gets overlooked a lot is Blue Cheer.

Re: Roots of Metal?
Black Sabbath IS the root of Metal. Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and a few others are the roots of Hard Rock. Not the same music (love them both). A band like Scorpions is a good example of the difference between the two kinds of music. Their olders albums (the Uli Roth time) is hard rock, the next are Metal.
