New Iron Maiden album due Sept 4th 2015 - The Book Of Souls

Iron Maiden’s eagerly awaited new studio album, The Book Of Souls, will be released globally on September 4th through Parlophone Records (Sanctuary Copyrights/BMG in the US). It was recorded in Paris with their longstanding producer Kevin “Caveman” Shirley in late 2014, with the finishing touches added earlier this year. However, the band decided to delay its release so that vocalist Bruce Dickinson, who was recently given the all-clear from a tumour, would have time to recuperate sufficiently to join in the preparations for the album’s launch.

The stunning cover art was created by Mark Wilkinson who has worked with the band previously, and because this 11 track album has a total running time of 92 minutes, it is Iron Maiden’s first ever double studio album. There’s a broader split on the song-writing compared to previous Maiden records, with bassist and founder member Steve Harris contributing to seven of the tracks; six of them with Maiden’s guitarists and one sole composition. This is also the first time since 1984’s Powerslave that an Iron Maiden studio album also features two tracks written solely by Bruce Dickinson, one of which is the longest song Maiden has ever recorded! And also two Dickinson/Smith collaborations.

Steve comments: “We approached this album in a different way to how we’ve recorded previously. A lot of the songs were actually written while we were there in the studio and we rehearsed and recorded them straight away while they were still fresh, and I think that immediacy really shows in the songs, they have almost a live feel to them I think. I’m very proud of The Book Of Souls, we all are, and we can’t wait for our fans to hear it, and especially to take it out on the road next year!”

Bruce continues: “We’re really excited about The Book Of Souls and had a fantastic time creating it. We started working on the album in late summer 2014 and recorded it at Guillame Tell Studios in Paris, where we’d done the Brave New World album back in 2000 so the studio holds special memories for all of us. We were delighted to discover the same magical vibe is still alive and very much kicking there! So we immediately felt at home and the ideas just started flowing. By the time we’d finished we all agreed that each track was such an integral part of the whole body of work that if it needed to be a double album, then double its going to be!”

The Book Of Souls tracklisting:

Cautiously optimistic.
Wasn't a big fan of the last one, and the one before, while ok, just doesn't make me want to go back and listen to much of it.

Hopefully with the new approach, things will be a bit fresher, and less prog.

I am curious about the one that is the longest Maiden tune to date.
Normally, this would cause me some concern, as I feel some of their more recent stuff has been long, just to be long. But with Bruce writing this one, I will withhold judgement.

Thank goodness Bruce pulled through.

There can't be too many Maiden fans that don't know about his head/throat cancer - but here he is publically speaking about it for the first time.
Awesome to see him doing so well !!!!!

Thanks John.

Right - so Steve's comment was in reference to the new album that they finished recording PRIOR to Buce's cancer being diagnosed (and treated).

Yeah. Bruce won't be doing any singing yet. He still needs to get back into shape.
Best to take things slowly.

meh

The preview doesn't really do anything for me.
Yeah, it sounded good. But it doesn't tell me if the song is good.
Need to hear some vocals, what kind of lyrics, what's the actual tone of the song.
Stuff like that.

Trying to keep my expectations in check, so I might end up pleasantly surprised when I actually hear the album.
The last two were only ok-to-good for me. A few stand-out pieces in them, but overall I was disappointed.
The boys still have the talent, but the style wasn't what I was looking for.

Video has been up since Friday
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-F7A24f6gNc

Here was my initial review that I posted on FB Friday night.

"Good tune.
Not awesome, but pretty good.
I've listened to it 5 or 6 times now.
Actually grabbed me right off the bat on the first listen. That hasn't happened much the last couple albums.
Not a fan of the chorus though. The music has a nice gritty feel, but the chorus is just too clean and smooth. The rest of the lyrics are ok, but not very memorable. Sorry, but a Maiden tune should tell a story.
Guess I'll actually watch the video now.

Holy crap!
Maiden actually made a cool video!
And I would so love to play those first 3 video games in that video. Especially the 8-bit, and the Mortal Kombat one."

Yeah - listened to it 4 or 5 times on Friday and over the weekend.

Didn't post about it because I still wasn't sure how I felt.

Finally got 5mins to watch the video JUST though.

Conclusion - not a great track for me. Maybe it'll grow on me but this sounds like "filler" material right now.

Still like the snippet they released a week ago though  - and yup - LOVE the video - very clever - lot's of stuff to watch out for (my fave bit so far is the "Trooper beer" commercial).

And as regards cool Maiden videos - I'll always have a special place in my heart for the "Run to the hills" vid :)

Ok. I've given the album a full listen.

It rocks!

A lot of tracks have me toe-tapping, and head-bopping.
One even has me grinning like a madman as I listen to the lyrics.
I soooooo want to hear some of these done live.
Like right now!

I won't post my full review yet, as I don't want to color anyone else's impressions.
Disc 1 is kind of meh except the opener. (which, BTW somehow makes Speed Of Light sound better when it follows it)
But Disc 2 is solid top-to-bottom.
And that 18 minute track is amazing! Though I wouldn't mind an edit without the instrumental 6 minutes in the middle.

Working my way through it in-between stuff.

4 down, 7 to go - so far LOVE it!

The single is the worst of the 4 (but like Trev says - it is better after "If Eternity Should Fail" for some strange reason - possibly the change of pace).

Track 4 "The Red and the Black" kicks major ass and is beautful, latter-mid-period Maiden at their best.

OMG - welcome back guys!
