Your favorite "cover" songs
As a rule, I hate cover tunes. Unless a band takes a song and makes it their own. Does it in their own true style. What are your favorite covers? And, just for fun, what are the worst ones?
For me, I love the Sisters of Mercy's version of "Gimme Shelter" Utterly transformed into a Sisters' track. Also, dig RevCo's "Do ya Think I'm Sexy?" and Social Distortion's "Ring of Fire" (and their "Under My Thumb" while I'm at it!!!) Danzig doing "Hand of Doom" is a natural. A lil' known group, The Bosshoss does a real fun version of "Word Up". Manson's "Sweet Dreams"
Worst: Pantera's "Planet Caravan" (ooooh! EXACTLY the same song with modern recording equipment!!! YAWN!) Syndrome of a Down "Snowblind" In their style but still awful. Judas Priest doing "Johnny B. Goode" *barf* Concrete Blonde "Everybody Knows"

I really like the White Zombie of Sabbath: Children of the Grave. Slayer's cover of Judas Priest: Dissident Aggressor.
Slayer did an awful cover of Steppenwolf's: Born to Be Wild, I love Slayer and lemme tell you, it was torture to listen to.

Re: Your favorite "cover" songs
At the moment I have to say favorites:
Sammy Hagars version of Piece of My Heart.
I don't know if it would be considered a cover, but I always like Johnny Winters version of Jumpin' Jack Flash.
And I have to agree with tay666 with The Atari's cover of Boys of Summer. I never cared for Don Henleys version, but the Atari's version is excellant.
Worst: Jailhouse Rock by Motley Crue (again just off the top of my head)

I actually really like the original as well. The Coop wrote: And I have to agree with tay666 with The Atari's cover of Boys of Summer. I never cared for Don Henleys version, but the Atari's version is excellant.
I think the remake is just as good though.
Catches the same feel, but with a slightly different vibe.
Another good one

Re: Your favorite "cover" songs
I will echo the Sisters Of Mercy version of "Gimme Shelter". Also check out the Goo Goo Dolls and Impulse Manslaughter versions of that tune.
No Empathy, a punk band out of Chicago, does a killer cover of "TNT". The live version was always the best way to experience it, but the recorded one worked well also.
7 Seconds version of "99 Red Balloons" might be the greatest cover ever recorded.
Naked Raygun did a killer version of the Stiff Little Fingers classic "Suspect Device".
The Lords Of The New Church did a great "Like A Virgin".
Every single cover Michael Hedges did was stunning.

I also have to say Little Caesar and their cover of "How I Wish It Would Rain" is beyond amazing. Ron Young's voice is amazing, and on that song it REALLY shines.

Re: Your favorite "cover" songs
You're right - Sammy's cover of Piece of My Heart is right up there - I liked Motley Crue's Version of Smokin in the Boys Room too.KISS cover or Argent's God Gave Rock and Roll to You is muy favorite even though not a straight cover. Lynyrd Skynyrd"s cove of Cream's Crossroads from original band great too.

Re: Your favorite "cover" songs
The Junkyard Dogs (members of the Supersuckers) did a killer version of "Breaking the Law" with a mandolin and a bunch of kids singing backups... Awesome stuff
I like a few tracks from Me First and the Gimme Gimmes especially "Wild World" and "Sloop John B"
The Quakes "Killing Moon"
Reverend Horton Heat doing "Stop That Pigeon"
Bad: Megadeth "No More Mr. Nice Guy" and "Paranoid"

Re: Your favorite "cover" songs
Just remembered a horrible remake.
Couple years ago someone did a remake of Aerosmith's Dream On.
Don't know who did it, but they had a female on vocals, and it just killed the song completely.
