The reason I haven't been as active lately.

#1 Post by tay666 »

Not sure if anyone has noticed that I haven't been quite as active on the board lately.
There have been tons of awesome builds I really wanted to comment on, and discussions I wanted to jump into, but just haven't had time.
I barely have time anymore to make a pass or two through the forums to check for problems, fix issues, and deal with other admin issues.
There is reason for that. It's been mentioned in couple threads, but I wanted to make a thread to explain (and to kind of celebrate).
The wife and I just bought a new house!

Image

It's actually been in the works for a couple months now. We put in the bid around the end of October, and it was accepted. It's just taken almost 2 months for it to close.
We finally signed the final papers and wired the money on Friday. Got the keys on Saturday morning.

Anyway. Since the bid was accepted, we've been busy starting to pack stuff up. Sorting through things. Sending lots of stuff to Goodwill. I've been selling off kits and other collectibles that I don't feel like moving. We've been in our current house for 26 years now, so we have a ton of crap here to go through and pack.
Now things are going to get even busier. We've got a bunch of work to do on the house before we move in. The house has apparently been empty for about 3 years according to one of our new neighbors. We bought it from Chase bank for a great price. We were in the right place at the right time. We were the first people to look at it, 3 days after it hit the market, (realtor hadn't even put a sign in the yard yet) and we put in a bid that day for just a couple hundred under the asking price.

The house was built in 1890, and is still in great shape structurally. Even has the original hardwood floors that are still in nice condition. But, we've got wallpaper to remove in every room, then painting. New tile in the entrance, both bathrooms, and laundry room.
I want to update the electrical.
And the kitchen we thought we were going to leave alone, now looks like we are going to rip out and redo.
I am hoping, once we get the utilities on, that there isn't any problem with the plumbing. The house was professionally weatherized, but still, you never know.

So, the next couple months are going to be really busy. No working on models at all :(
They're all packed up. Probably won't get unpacked until some time after WF.
I'll be busy with 1:1 projects until then.
Good thing we have no deadline to be out of our current house. We still own it too.
It was already paid off, so we just got a home equity loan against it before we started looking for new places. That way we knew our budget ahead of time. Not looking forward to paying utilities on 2 places for a few months, but it will be worth it to have the time to fix the new house, and move a little at at time instead of having to move it all, all at once.
Then by spring, we should be able to list our current house, and hopefully it will sell quick, and I won't have a house payment again.

1890 - nice - something with a bit of character for once. Most of the stuff in Vancouver is less than 50 years old - they call anything over 40 years old an antique (bless).

"1:1 projects" - lol

It's awesome when you get into the "we OWN our own place" position" - couldn't happen to a nicer, harder-working person. Well-deserved.

Congrats Trev - REALLY happy for you & your family! :thumb2:

Thanks.
We've actually been in that place since June of 2013 when we paid off our first house.
It's kinda weird to have a payment again at this point. But since I know it should be very short-term it's not so bad.
It is kind of strange having 2 houses at once though.

Good news is I don't have to redo as much of the wiring as I feared.
My best friend came over today and we went over it. (he's a master electrician)
I'm only going to have to replace about half the wiring I thought I would + all the new runs I need to pull. Put in a new panel to consolidate the 5 boxes that are in the basement now.

Sweet.

Best of luck and it seems like you've got it under control.

We bought a hundred year old house 18 years ago, but we had to do everything as we lived in it, and I mean everything, including me putting in a new soil stack alone. I would have loved to be able to work on it before moving, but it wasn't in the cards. To double down, we also had a baby on the way.
Plausible deniability.

Neat-looking house. Lots of character. It'll be worth the hard work.

Fine looking old house.
In my region the climate is very hard on most wooden houses. I have quite a lot of refurbishing to do this coming spring, mostly around the window frames. Then a full repainting and replacing the front steps.
I found a source for clap boards identical to the original, to repair the main exterior walls, but for the extension I figure to use cheaper manmade siding.

The way my pup is growing I'm considering walling in the back porch , at 9 months she is already way to big for the locally available dog houses. Once she has her own room she'll be wanting her own cell phone and entertainment center no doubt. She likes TV and stayed glued to the screen when Sean Bean was on. I think its his voice and that lower class accent.

PS
I hope you don't find any rolls of old carpeting with ominous stains and chalked outlines.

That's great news Trevor! Hope you have a great new modeling space. Be careful when removing wall paper.. You just might find classic movie posters behind it! ;-) Its fun moving into a new/old place. You just never know what might have been hidden in the crawl spaces, attic and nooks and crannies of old building. Best of luck!

Very cool! Congrats to you and the Mrs.
I'm sure there is a "Mr Fancypants owns two homes" joke in there somewhere but I'll spare you the pain.

No carpet in the house. All hardwood and tile. :D

She has only seen the outside. She will finally get to see the inside this weekend when she comes home for xmas.

Oh yeah.
It's gonna be a while until I get that far, but I have the entire basement for my area.
8' headroom in the basement, and so far it's dry.
I will finally have a dedicated work area. Which means after I get set up, I can finally get an airbrush too.

Well, technically, we only own one, the bank owns most of the other.

Well, so far, there is good news and bad news.
Bad news is that it's going to be like a week until the power gets turned on.
Which means still no light, heat, or power tools.

Good news is that the wallpaper removal it moving along well ahead of schedule.
It's coming off in full sheets. Which is really good since it's every room except the kitchen which is paneled. Plus the hallway ceiling upstairs.
Something about the glue freezing and heating back up for the last 3 years is making it real easy.
So far, only a few places need the plaster patched from cracks or weak spots.

And if anyone is curious why we wanted the wallpaper gone.
Check out these colors!

Congrats to you ol amigo! Funny thread. :P Reminding me of my old home town of Old Hickory Tn. Old majestic homes built in 1918 currently going for $289.K!
With Nashville being the "it city" right now its pretty crazy with all the cheap high rise condos and gentrification going on. But hey! Great to hear your doing well. Me to! Tomorrow I pay off the last credit card then its only the mortgage and utilities. Been a good year! \:D/
