My recent performance .. or .. Scenes from my "Other Hobby"

#1 Post by bucketfoot-al »

Had a three-song set along with some jokes at the expense of James Dripps of Dripps Vocal Studios at the recent studio recital in Vacaville, CA. As always, I was in character as "Jolie" (the nickname of Al Jolson, The World's Greatest Entertainer). James let me open and close the festivities. It went quite well.

(I'm not quitting my day job, but I do believe that my vocalizing has come quite a ways since I first started performing my one-man show at CA Veterans Homes 5 years ago...)

... feel free take a peek below ... the songs are "My Blushin' Rosie", "Rockabye your Baby (with a Dixie Melody)", and a peppy, toe-tapping cabaret-style version of "April Showers" ....

You are a tall man.
Very entertaining, you sound just like him. Nice to see you getting an avenue for your passion project.
Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. You are much too kind. When I opened for the main act at the annual Jolson Society Convention a couple of years ago, I quipped: "I know just what you're thinking: 'Jolson on stilts!'. Twice the height and half the talent!"

*LOL*.

Another true story: When I performed in 2015 at the Yountville, CA Veterans Home for about 100 WW2 and Korean vets (half of whom were in wheelchairs or wheeled in on cots as it was in the hospital section - these fellows and gals were near the end), one old veteran was overheard to say to his buddy as I came out to begin: "I don't know how good this fellow is going to be - Jolson was only 5' 6"!" *LOL* After it ended many of them were in tears because of the memories it brought back - Jolson performed thousands of shows for GIs in hospitals and battlefields in WW2, and in Korea.

I can't do anything about the fact I'm 6' 5" as far as that goes - but I'm gonna keep singing Mr Jolson's songs!

You captured the feel of those oldies but goodies quite well. I especially liked your shoes. Nice touch.
