Martian Monk challenge

#1 Post by Rocketeer »

At Wonderfest, a bunch of us Seattle-area guys decided to have a little challenge; we'd all get the same kit, and each of us would build it our own way. After a last-minute search of the dealer room, we decided to get the Martian Monk, a simple kit which seemed to have some possibilities:

http://www.cygenus.com/ (scroll about halfway down)

The kits were to be finished in time for Sci-Fan, a contest held by the superlative Galaxy Hobby just this weekend. Out of eight kits we bought, seven got finished, which is a pretty good percentage any way you look at it. And here are pictures:

Jeff's meditative take, complete with trickling fountain and ultrasonic mister:

Paul's Dr Seussian version:

Preston's, perched forlornly on the Pedestal of Shame:

My own, with Hawaiian shirt and levitating tiki mug:

Steve's, done up as a Blue Meanie:

Terry's depressed veteran of an invasion, sitting on his memoir:

...and Tony changed his genus and species completely:

We put a little money into a pot for the winners (chosen by an impartial third party), and Tony took first, Jeff second, and I got third. A fun project!

Thanks for the complete report, Steve! That was a fun challenge that I'm glad I was able to participate in. All of the entries were unique and fun to see. Looking forward to next year's challenge. 8)

Great idea and kudos to everyone who joined in the build. Lots of creativity there!

I know from personal experience how difficult it is to get folks to participate in something like this, much less actually FINISH!

I just have to second what Tony said; we had a whole lot of fun doing our own thing with this, and I'm thrilled to see how different and original each of our takes on the same kit turned out. And congrats on your well-deserved win, Tony!

Thanks guys. Yeah this was a fun project...and even more so since most of the modelers gather at my house every other Sunday to work on kits. It was fun and inspiring to watch as one or another would sculpt details onto his kit while someone else was fashioning a custom base or experimenting with ultrasonic misters.
