I have officially bought my first mini

#1 Post by tay666 »

Well, watching all the mini painters on YouTube has finally taken it's toll.
I broke down and bought my first ever Warhammer mini.

I saw this thing in a video from Squidmar and fell in love with it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkTx9lPCdYc

I love spiders. Always have. And the size of this, and the nastiness of it, just compelled me to track down what it was (since he never said in the video) and where I could get one.
Of course, it is OOP so I had to wait patiently for one to show up at a reasonable price on ebay. But now I own one.
Can't wait to get started on it once I get a few other projects cleared from my bench.

That looks crazy! Looking forward to what you are going to do with it.

I'm just doing the spider.
No idea what I am going to do with all the extra bits yet, but I am sure they will come in handy for something down the road.

I really want to start building it, but I HAVE to clear some projects off the bench first.
And with it being spring, and trying to get stuff taken care of outside, it hasn't been easy finding any bench time lately.

There are MANY cool 'mini's. So many. Great art in many of them.

Well, I finally started on one of these!
I say it that way, because I also ended up buying a build-up really cheap.
I broke the extra bits off and gave to a guy I work with who is really into minis.

So, this is what I started with, after I re-attached 3 of the legs that came off in shipping. (so I went ahead and pinned all the legs since the original builder primed the pieces first, then glued the legs on)

Image

I eventually hope to have at least 3 of these, and hopefully about 5. I have several paint schemes in mind. Since this one was already built, and primed, I figured it would be a good one to have fun with. So this has turned into a project to learn a bit of airbrushing.
First a base coat of dark blue

Image

Image

I just wanted a light coat to give it color, but leave the black in the recesses.
Then I shot a lighter highlight with a bit of metallic mixed in to give it some sheen.

Image

Image

I need to touch it up a bit tomorrow as I see a few spots I missed. Good thing I mixed up quite a bit and still have lots left. That's what happens when you mix metallic blue, a very light blue, some chrome to lighten it, and some more white to lighten it even more. Then add some airbrush medium since I am using craft paints, I really need to thin them down.

The plan after that is a splotchy red pattern on the back of the abdomen and base of the legs. Still need to decide on the shade of red and if I want to sponge it on, try shooting it with the airbrush, or brush paint it.

Basically, I have a rough game plan on what I want to do, but no concrete thoughts on colors or specifics. Just letting the muse take me where it will to get to my final destination.

Well, since I couldn't get the red I wanted to shoot through the airbrush, I switched to hand painting it. So, it's not quite as 'splotchy' as I first envisioned, I do still like how it is coming along.

THAT is supposed to be a "mini"?!? Look pretty freaking HUGE!!! :D

And nasty looking, too. Honestly I couldn't have something like that on my desk because it would freak me out whenever I looked at it. :btongue:

Can't wait to see it finished - as well as its "brothers and sisters"

I am having so much fun with this kit. So many details to pick out and work on.
I also finally created a page on my site for it
https://www.tylisaari.com/models/misc/mini/spider.htm

I don't think I will have any trouble getting this done for WF.
Every time I sit down to the bench I grab this first to work because it is so fun.

Lookin" good!

I think since these minis (for the most part) aren't spun cast metal anymore, they can really pack the details in there.

Coming along nicely - I think I'll call him "Boris".

I'm pretty sure that's what my Daughter sees in her "minds eye" every time I get a scream that she's found a spider in the house

I'm tempted to get one just to bug her (pun totally intended).

I've spent several sessions blocking in all the spikes and fangs on this beastie.
Soooooo many spikes.

Image

Still a long way to go cleaning things up and picking out some more details.
This also isn't the finished color, this is just a white that has really good coverage so I can get it close before dialing in the actual color.

More work on spikes

Image
A look at the underside.

Image

Looking at the pics, I still have a few more touch ups to do. (one of the reasons I take so many in progress pics. The camera seems to see more than my eyes do. That, or it's just easier for me to pick out flaws in an image, than with my actual eyes on the kit)
Anyway, I hit all the spikes with a blueish white and cleaned up my mistakes with some midnight blue.
After that, I haven't decided if I am going to hit the spikes with pastels, or maybe a blue tone from Army Painter. One way or another I need to feather the bases of them. I am leaning towards trying the tone first, then if I don't like it, go with the pastels.

And to differentiate things more, I am thinking about doing the fangs in a greenish color.

With it not any specific scale, it brings me back to those giant insect models of the 60s (and the even earlier 50's B movies) so if mine I would do an of end of The Mist movie scene. But thats me... :mrgreen2:
