Thanks guys!
Cut out the bulbous sections on top of the head between the eyes and down the back of the neck.
Narrowed down and increased the arch of the right wing segment closest to the body.

Threw on some primer.
Next major step is to sculpt a new head
Still very rough, Lots and lots of refining and detailing left to do.

Always late to the party - still - I brought the clown outfit & the dancing girls! Image Image Image

SOOOOOOOOO - I guess this qualifies as a kitbashbash (try saying that 5 times fast with a mouthful of cornflakes).

When you cut off the bottom half of that "Ernie" head my jaw hit the floor - much like his I guess (ah - Dad humour - what would we do without it).

I've always loved that bust - my copy is the unpainted one that John "raydrz" Petik previously owned - means even more to me because of that.

Those new wings (and tail) are looking great, and those outside shots look like they could be stills from a monster movie - very cool.

Marked improvement on the original bash - keep up the good work.

Ditto on dinosaurs & Harryhausen . . . but (amazingly) have only TWO related kits (1 of John's builds + 1 raw kit - BOTH "Gwangi") in my collection

Hey Ian, welcome to the party, and thanks for the dancing girls!

Great to hear your kind, helpful and humorous comments again!

I love that Ernie sculpt too and have used it in a couple bashes.
I have a couple more of them on the shelf waiting to be incorporated in some future bash.

Thank you for the positive feedback!

I cut the head off in order to shorten and narrow the neck, and to make it easier to sculpt a new head
Cut the back hump down some more to lower and change the angle going into the back of the neck
Started detailing the wings; slimmed/toned down the wing fingers , and started adding webbing details

Actually looks scarier that way - fill in the hole, add a couple of beads for eyes at the front of the neck - and it's time for paint! :)

So - to summarise - just in case I got confused, it DID have an "Ernie" head, which you then half removed, and then completely removed ?

I'm starting to think you are in touch with your feminine side . . . can't make your blimmin' mind up :P (* that's SO going to get me in trouble - for all sorts of reasons! *) Image

Of course - that's likely the case for a lot of modellers - but not everyone takes the time to share progress like you do (which we appreciate).

Hah, by now you should know how many changes in direction my bashes take!

I really liked the Ernie head on this bash, but it was a tad too big for the body, and because the head was so big, the neck was oversized too.

And I wanted this bash to have a balrog vibe to it so I am going to attempt to make the head look like a balrog head. The motivation for this bash was from the LOTR books where Gandalf and the Balrog fall into water at the bottom of the chasm, and the balrog emerges slimy versus on fire.

What made me decide to cut the head off and change the neck was the right side view of the bash (see pic below) .
The neck was way out of proportion, didn’t “flow right” out from the body, and looked cartoonish.

The right wing where it attaches above the right shoulder is too high.
I am trying to lower it without having to cut off the whole wing.
Built up left shoulder.
Narrowing out where wings attach to body and middle of the back to add visual interest

Rather than sculpt a head from scratch, going to use head from this kit (I forget kit name and sculptor?)
Image

I have an extra head as I have two of these kits and replaced head of one of them with alien queen head
Image

Working on changing head to make it less gorilla like.
Changing eyes, jaw and mouth lines , nose, sharpening teeth and will add horns.
