Bashing weta LOTR Balrog statue to change wings to use sideshow deathwing dragon statue wings.
Using some broken deathwing wings. Problem is they are both left wings, so I have to convert one of them into a right side wing.
I also plan to get rid of back flames as I am not a skilled enough painter to make the flames look anything good close to realistic. Will also get rid of that flame sword.
Started with weta balrog statue
And 2 broken left wings from deathwing statue
Removed wings from balrog
Cut left wing and by flippping it over, will modify it to use for right side.
Here is what wings look like on deathwing statue
I am sure I can use the removed balrog wings for some future kitbash.

Good luck with this - that's a bold & difficult kitbash to attempt!
You'll make it work though.

Re: Statue-bash: Balrog with Deathwing dragon wings
Thanks Ian.
I think you are right, as this may be more difficult and much more work than I originally thought.
I was thinking it would be pretty fast and simple ; just cut off flames and old wings and put on new wings.
However, just getting rid of the flames was quite a bit of work and have lots of clean up left to do.
I decided to go ahead and cut the head off and reposition it. And streamline the under jaw and neck.
And now that I can clearly see the underside torso, I plan to build up the chest and significantly redo and streamline the abs as it kind of has a pot-belly with six-pack thing going on.

I am not familiar with this particular statue (gasp!- I know). When I did a search for Weta Balrog I got something considerably larger featuring just the head and flames etc. How big is the original, ah, um before you decapitated the poor creature?
Intriguing choice by the way, Joe.

Never mind. I found the WETA website and found the statue. How did I miss this?

Re: Statue-bash: Balrog with Deathwing dragon wings
Thanks guys- I always enjoy your observations !
The originally sculpt has a massive neck running into the shoulders and chest and straight into head, without any tapering or much visual interest.
I plan to modify the neck and head position to give a better view of shoulders and a beefed up chest.
So,
Cut the neck way back to reposition the head in a more frontward and upward position.
Cut the bottom of neck off from the shoulders and chest.
Started streamlining and reshaping the head neck.
Cut out the jaw line on the head and neck to give more visual interest.
And, cut out the massive hunk of resin off the back (reciprocating saw is coming in handy on this bash!)

My Wife would look at that as a win-win - improved physique or life insurance payout (she had that "sparkle" in her eyes when she found out what THAT amounted to)barad_dur wrote:Hah, I was thinking the exact same about myself.

Re: Statue-bash:Balrog Deathwing dragon:new pics 2020-05-28
The original statue has the wings connecting way down the back of the tail.
So there was a large chunk of resin running down the top of the tail.
New wings will not attach way down the tail, so removed the back tail resin to streamline the tail.
I am leaving the huge chunk of resin on the back for now as new wings need a strong thick base to attach to.
I will trim it down and blend into back and tail and neck after I see exactly where wings attach.

Now
Here is how wings attached on back originally

Re: Statue-bash:Balrog Deathwing dragon:new pics 2020-05-29
I decided to just remove that huge mass of resin off the back as I couldn’t see how I would ever be able to blend in the new wings and down to the streamlined tail.
The first rough test fit of one of the wings gives me confidence there is still enough resin left to securely support and hold the wings.

Thanks!
So far so good.
This statue originally weighed over 30 lbs. I bet I have removed at least 10 lbs so far.

30 lbs?! OMG. The Deathwing test fit looks terrific. Looks like a perfect match. I'll be curious as to how big the Balrog will be once your "bash" is over.
