I don't want to derail George's thread, but the first thing I thought of when I saw it was Dick Smith's Do-It-Yourself Monster Makeup book from Famous Monsters of Filmland. Does anybody else remember that book? I think I tried every makeup in that book. Mine ended up dog-eared from use.
There was a magic shop in downtown Houston that sold spirit gum, bald caps, crepe hair, and all sorts of goodies (as well as fart cushions, fake poop, flies in ice cubes, liquid smoke, etc.) The first makeup I tried was Split Face, and I think my favorite was Weird-Ohs Digger. I loved making eyeballs out of ping pong balls!

Man that takes me back, i also tried just about every make up. Also got in serious trouble with the werewolf make up and a jumpy neighbor.

Mark, no problem on the perceived thread derailment ; I enjoyed this book too while growing up, so I'm happy that seeing my thread allowed you to reminisce as well!

Re: Dick Smith's Do-It-Yourself Monster Makeup
I had the original issue and mine became dog-eared as well. Back in the '80s, I bought the updated reprint (which was printed on better paper stock) and I still have it tucked away; that reprint now goes for big bucks on Amazon! BTW, Dick Smith also did a videotape that accompanied a makeup set-- the video is available on DVD thru eBay for as little as $8.75; just search "Dick Smith Monster Make-up DVD".
