Steve Ditko 1927 -2018

#5 Post by Scott M »

Steve Ditko passed in late June at the age of 90. I've been pleased and slightly surprised at the nods the Marvel films have given to Ditko's iconography in the case of Spider-Man and Dr. Strange - his two most notable creations. As a child of the Silver Age, I was fascinated by the "strangeness" of Ditko's artwork, starting first with the above mentioned characters at Marvel, then with his work with Charlton, Warren Publications, and DC. His work for "Creepy" and "Eerie" are especially memorable to me because he was able to work in black and white and use different mediums than he did in the full color comics. Definitely one of the most distinctive comic book artists of any era. He lived a long life and by all accounts lived it according to his own standards.
