Why did I think Stacey Keach was dead?!

#1 Post by TomOtattoos »

I swear I'm friggin' losing my mind. I would've bet you money that Keach had died maybe three years ago. I swear I remember it being reported, but I just watched him on Bored to Death. Can anyone shed any light on why I thought this, or should I just commit myself. BTW I'm very happy that he isn't, lol

No I actually know him mostly from the Cheech and Chong stuff, but it seems that Mike Hammer is in the same vein (vain?) as Bored to Death-at least in the Detective/mystery aspect.

I think it's a shift in the space/time continuum. There was actually a thread on a conspiracy site I frequent about this! 8)

Used to watch Mike Hammer with my Mom when I was a child but I think his best role IMO was from The Ninth Congfiguration.

He suffered a stroke 2 years ago...maybe that's what you were thinking of?

He did a hilarious music video singing about how he is "Keach. Stacy Keach."

My friend and frequent comics collaborator Max Allan Collins recently wrote and produced two new Mike Hammer "radio novels" (amped-up audio books) starring Keach as Hammer. Keach did the music for them as well as playing Mike (Volumes 2 and 3 of the series).

Keach has also done the audio books of the new Mike Hammer novels written by Max from Mickey Spillane's unfinished manuscripts -- The Goliath Bone, The Big Bang and Kiss Her Goodbye.

Mickey Spillane died in 2006 and IIRC played Mike Hammer in a movie once, maybe that's what you were thinking?

Was that "I the Jury"?
Did he knock a guy out, and not finding a rope to tie him up he instead nailed his hands to the floor?

I'm not sure. I do remember hearing at the time of his passing that he was one of the only authors to actually portray one of his characters on the screen. Now that I think about it though, I had the t.v. or radio on and was only half listening to it and heard the reporter say something about the guy who played Mike Hammer died and thinking that they were talking about Keach.

Curiosity got the best of me, I found this on wikipedia:
In The Girl Hunters (1963) filmed in England, Spillane appeared as Hammer, one of the few occasions in film history in which an author of a popular literary hero has portrayed his own character. Spillane was scheduled to film The Snake as a follow up, but the film was never made.

I wonder who it was that nails the thug's hands to the floor?
All these Film Noir run together in my memory sometimes.

I was watching an old tape of "Born to Kill" the other night, Lawrence Tierney would have made a great Mike Hammer if he never in fact played that role.
When he played Elaine's dad on Seinfield he terrified the rest of the cast so the character was not used again. He could certainly get into character with a vengence.
