"Game of Thrones" HBO Series Discussion

#1 Post by Stormheart »

I'm a long time fan of the books, and I thought HBO did a great job with season one. "A Clash of Kings" was another very good book in the "Song of Ice and Fire" epic by George R.R. Martin, and I'm looking forward to seeing how HBO does with it. Season two starts Sunday...can't wait!!!

Anyone else excited?

Haven't read the books and was dubious when the series debuted but I was absolutely hooked after about the third episode. For my money, this is the best HBO series to come along since Deadwood. Can't wait for Sunday!

I refuse to watch any of these until I read the books. I intend to read them over the summer.

Is season 2 going to be "A Clash Of Kings"? I was wondering if that was what they were going to do. From what I have heard, "Storm of Swords" is the best of the books.

"A Clash of Kings" is the second book in the series...so I'm sure its' next up for HBO. It's primary focus should be the battles between the various military factions fighting for control of the Throne of Westeros. So...expect this season to be much more action packed than season one. Should be a fun ride!

I received all five of the present books for Christmas. I tried to pace my reading of these , but you just can't put them down and must immediately go to the next without a break.

Those who haven't read the books have some great treats in store for you as the series continues.

A six book is in the works but I have no idea when it will come out.

One drawback of the books is repitition to get those who haven't read the previous books caught up. This is handled fairly well in the story of previous events being passed on to characters who had heard only rumours.
This reminds the reader that when you have six different eye witnesses you are likely to get six different stories about what happened.

Favorite quote from Sunday night's episode. Tyrion to his sister, Queen Cersei:

Slight variation from the book in details of events but still well done, and perhaps an improvement.

Dontos was far worse of an alky in the book, and the scene would have been at a tourney. Dontos stumbling along chasing his horse with no pants on. A real Buffoon.

...and directed by feature film director Neil Marshall (the Descent, Doomsday, Centurion, Dog Soldiers etc)

Quite a lot of changes compared to the books, but as far as I can see this is to help tell the story in a more condensed way. Dontos, as well as the frog eaters seems to be written out of the story.

Good wrapup to another enjoyable season! I'm already looking forward to season three when they take on "A Storm of Swords". Next to "A Game of Thrones", it's my favorite book in the series so far.

I'm just waiting to see if anyone does a kit of that mounted white-walker.
Hopefully with a clear cast head to put a blue LED into.

Not having read the books, I don't know when King Joffrey is going to "get his", but personally I can't wait. No doubt it will be an appropriately vile and painful ending.

I guess I am the only one who was not thrilled with this season. Big fan of the books, and this season went sooooo far wide of the mark. I thought they needed to start each episode with a disclaimer "Based of off G.R.R Martin's Game of Thrones". Don't get me wrong, I understand they had to change the story to get an 800+ page book into 12 hours, but man, was it different. Each episode, you got maybe five minutes per character.....

Tor, That is unfortunately the inevitable problem with transferring these into a TV series. Not only do they have to force +800 pages into a 9 hours (not 12) format, they have a total budget much less than an ordinary Hollywood action film for a whole season. So first off all those massive scenes from the books plays out really minimalistic in the TV series, and all characters has to be straight to the point when it comes to dialog and presentation, where the books overindulges on each persons thoughts and deeds... Some persons, and storylines are and will be left out due to time (and possibly budget-) restrictions.

Personally I think they're doing a fantastic job in keeping as true as possible to the books. I'm on book five at the moment and have most stuff fresh in mind, but all friends who haven't read the books seems to respond to the story in the TV series in the same way I do in the books, so it can't be that off.

I find it quite interesting that they've in some aspects of the story already are deep into book 3 though. I wonder if they plan on getting a little ahead of the books so they don't have to do as many seasons...
