What do you guys seal them with?
Re: Pastels - Which ones do I need?
I generally use Dullcote to seal them. Do a very light misty coat from about 10" away. Once that's on, you can come back with heavier coats of needed (although in general you only ever want to do light misty coats with Dullcote, or it'll come out satin)

Re: Pastels - Which ones do I need?
I usually start out my dullcote from even further away.
I dust it on from about 3' away with the spray can. Then I work in closer until I get an even coat.
Want to make sure it fixes it in place instead of blowing it off the kit.
Worst thing, is when you go a little heavier to account for it lightening up, and instead it gets brighter.

I've been using this instead of dullcote. Do you think Dullcote might be better?Re: Pastels - Which ones do I need?
I think Dullcote is supposed to be the best. It is irritating that it is only offered in those small expensive cans.
I found a huge box of used Rembrandt Soft Pastels on eBay. 90 individual colors, for only $60.

I hear Army Painters Anti-Shine spray is supposed to be good too, but it's pure liquid poison in a can, and there's no way I can use it indoors. Dullcote I can handle indoors with a respirator, as its smell will go away in about 10 minutes. Army Painters stuff just hangs in the air forever and you can feel your brain-cells dying when you breathe it in.
Good for people with year round mild climates who can spray outdoors all the time, but here in Vancouver we only get about five months where you can spray outside before it gets too cold or too humid.

Seems like I bought expensive chalks and nothing else. All my work gets "erased". Whether I mist it with Dullcoat or Future there are no highlights and no colors.
Thought maybe it was my grey on black not coming out enough but tried a purple on black and poof, the minute I hit it with anything it gets washed away, absorbed.
$$$ down the drain

I wonder if there is a way to make the model tacky to make the pigment stay when you spray it with Dullcote?GAWD wrote:Seems like I bought expensive chalks and nothing else. All my work gets "erased". Whether I mist it with Dullcoat or Future there are no highlights and no colors.

Tried it over fresh paint , over fresh Dell, over fresh future. Besides making a mess nothing stays. Giving it another try as we speak before I chuck them into the garbage.vortexx wrote:I wonder if there is a way to make the model tacky to make the pigment stay when you spray it with Dullcote?GAWD wrote:Seems like I bought expensive chalks and nothing else. Re: Pastels - Which ones do I need?
So the adventure is over.
Doesn't matter how I hit the pastels, the distance, pressure etc they just dissolve into nothing. Was worth a shot but the thing that I hate about this hobby the most is the money thrown away. I've spent more money on "trying" paints and things than I have on the ones I actually like and use.
Back to airbrushing highlights and shadows
EDIT: Now my blacks have turned yellow every where the pastels were](./images/smilies/eusa_wall.gif)

Can you bring them back? Those appear to be a cheap generic type of product.

Re: Pastels - Which ones do I need?
I use this stuff. Works fine.vortexx wrote:I've been using this instead of dullcote. Do you think Dullcote might be better?
Since I also use Vallejo paints, they have a Matt that works just as good.

Those are really cheap quality pastels. I wonder if you would have had different results with good pastels. You can try buying a single stick of a good quality pastel to see if that makes a difference. Note: good quality pastels are not cheap. A set with that many colors of decent quality pastels will cost you $200 and up.

This is what I have (slightly different set though):

Thanks guys. I might try some panpastels with my next kit.
I cant bring these back as ive already sanded down a couple of them.

Re: Pastels - Which ones do I need?
I use Alphacolor, and found that if you seal with dullcote very lightly at a slight distance, they will work fine.
Too much dullcote and your work pretty much disappears.

Re: Pastels - Which ones do I need?
I have these as well and they work great. I also use the pan pastels as i previously mentioned. For our hobby we would probably never use all of it in our lifetime, but nevertheless they both work very well.vortexx wrote:This is what I have (slightly different set though):

I also had something similar to what you had and the pigment quality is not as good as the others, but i have used both a rattle can matte finish, testors dull cote and Garage kit flat cote but always mist very lightly with first and second coats.....then i go a little heavier after and it works without blowing it off.
The first two or three coats are literally a spritz from very far away just landing on the kit.
