Nameplates, brass--Recommendations?

#1 Post by Rocketeer »

Having recently finished the Giant Steam Bison, I'm now working on getting a nameplate made. I'd like the nameplate to be black printing on a brass strip. (Not an engraved nameplate; that'd feel wrong for this particular model.)

I've been working with a large-ish online outfit, who did fine on an earlier order, but this time it's kinda been one little thing after another (credit card confusion; they seem to think my name is my wife's; their first proof used the wrong original; the second they made the wrong proportions). I don't doubt they'll produce a fine nameplate in the end, but good grief. :(

If I could find a company which performs perfectly, I'd switch my business (such as it is) to them.

Have any of you had black-on-brass nameplates printed? Who did you use? Did they do a good job?

You could have the nameplate engraved then fill the engraving with a black wash.

I'd like a wider selection of fonts and the ability to add curliques; so printing black-on-brass is a good solution for me.

Well, I can't really help with the "brass" part of this, but if anyone
is looking for a nameplate to be done, let me know.

I've been doing nameplates for guys in the hobby for the last 25 years.
Granted, I usually make the 'master' plates that they use when producing
their kits, but they can also be used as a 'one off' for your displays too.
(If you have any kits from Janus Company, Lunar Models, Alternative Images, or
even the Large Polar Lights Godzilla kit, then you've seen my handy work.)

Anyway, the offer is always there, and you can drop me a line if you
think you might want something.

A couple of ideas came to mind. You'll have to provide artwork for just about anything custom. Pad printing would be one way to go. Or dry-transfer like Archer decals.

Look up a guy called Feezlenuts on the RPF. His nameplates are amazing at a great price.

I don't need a nameplate but I'm curious as to what RPF is.

The RPF is the Replica Prop Forum (http://www.therpf.com).
It's a forum for people who like build and buy replica props from movies/TV.

Could you design the letterwork yourself, print that onto decal paper, and then apply the decal to the brass plate?

I don't know if a decal would adhere to brass, but it might be worth a try.

An interesting idea. I'd be worried about the decal film being pretty apparent between the letters, but it might be worth a test. :)

Yes, interesting. I think if you spray a gloss coat, then the decal, then another gloss coat it might work to eliminate the decal film line.
A way around that would be to print out the decal with enuff room to cover the entire plate, then the gloss coats. Hmmm.

If you have a local trophy shop they should be able to do it for you. I usually create the file in Adobe Illustrator, convert the text to outlines (turns the text into art, no chance of font substitution) and save the file as an EPS or TIFF file.

I've had work like you want done at a trophy shop. It might be something to look into.
If you have one locally, all the better.
