Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein Revisited (after 20 years)

#1 Post by csoldier »

Having been inspired by recent posts both here and on other forums of this magnificent 'nightmare’ kit, I decided after 20 years to give my version a revamp as it was looking rather sorry for itself.
1996 was when I first tackled this and although it is rare for me to revisit a kit, I thought this one deserved a bit of a tidy up.
The only omission from the original build is the Aurora Dracula cape (cos I can't remember where I put it :).
I have added several additional bits to add a bit more clutter to the scene and I’m not sure what happened to the rat that should be standing up on the name-plate box – I didn’t include it in the original build for some reason either.

The last two photos show the diorama with the loose bits removed, and I've also added a photo of the parts which having since discovered expanding foam I have now filled them with it. Hope you enjoy.

Excellent, one of the best versions of this kit I've seen.

Awesome paint job. There sure are a lot of these popping up lately. I am working on my second one right now. The first one was built back in 96.

As to why this is such a nightmare...

Back in 95-96... The kit was delayed due to problems with the vinyl. I never got a clear answer as to what the problem was, and then it was released. The vinyl is very thick and heavy as a quality kit should be, but the base and the parts to the vat are very warped. It is almost impossible to get the base to lay flat, and if you do manage it, some parts bulge in weird spots. Once the base is dealt with, there are still warped spots that I have never been able to fix. Then there is the vat the creature sits in. It is as warped as the floor and very hard to make fit. A bit of work with a heat gun takes care of that problem. Those were the main problems I has working on it so long ago and again last month, when I started work on my second one. Even so it is a very fun kit to work on.

Beautifully done!
Your choice of colors and painting style really bring out the dark atmosphere of the story.

Thanks all. I think Lorigrey has answered the 'nightmare' aspects of this - certainly mentioned some points I was not aware of. I did read (after I build it first time) that LEGO bricks may be a useful support for the base - as you can see, I glued the base to a wooden (MDF) base. I don't think I had as many issues with this one as some have had, I guess a few slipped through .

I did notice when renovating the bits (most attachments other the central composition had detached themselves) that the vinyl had warped, hence the use of plastic card supports and twine to pull bits together before reassembling.

Hopefully you'll see it at MK Ant

Thanks all for the positive comments, hope this and other recent builds encourage owners of the kit to take a 'bravery' test and have a crack at it. I suppose if produced today it would be a resin kit  .
