American Gods - Started April 30, 2017 on STARZ

#1 Post by Heavy Metal Spike »

.

Never read the novel, but was curious enough to watch the 1st episode due to the involvement of Neil Gaiman + Ian McShane + Gillian Anderson.

I suppose the word I'd use is . . . . ermmmmmmmmm . . . . different :bshock:

Visually AMAZING, episode 1 had elements of gore that reminded me of "300" (the movie), and a plot that developed slowly, being complex, clever & shocking.

The acting is also premier league - VERY well cast, directed and executed.

I'll certainly stick with it for a while to see how things (ahem) gestate.

It's a fairly faithful adaptation so far.

I want to watch this.

I've NEVER understood the fascination of watching a group of women run round a grass field while holding wooden sticks.

Episode 2 was ALSO cool, strange, thought-provoking, odd & slightly disturbing - and having just watched episode 3 it's not getting any LESS so

Always appreciate seeing Gillian (* DAYUM that woman is hot . . . . . sigh . . . . . *) and ol' "Lovejoy" is an eternal fave of mine.

It's already proved itself in the ratings - Season 2 has been greenlit - http://www.comingsoon.net/tv/news/84731 ... 2#/slide/1

Never read the book, have been watching the show, like it a lot so far, haven't seen Gillian Anderson. Did I miss her? That doesn't seem likely?

She plays "media" - the lass "inhabiting" Lucille Ball on the multi-TV-screen scene in episode 2.

LOLs Mark

Well just watched S01E04 - "Git Gone".

These folks REALLY know how to tell a story THAT'S for sure - very impressive episode.

Bit of a downer realising that we are already half way through the season.

So much goodness in E05. Gillian Anderson as Bowie and Monroe. Crispin Glover being Crispin Glover. Mad Sweeney with the dead wife. And McShane being batshit nuts. So good...

Agree 100% - best episode so far. Funny, unexpected, subtle, in-your-face . . . . . just PERFECT in every way. LOVE this show.

The multiple "easter eggs" from a certain book / radio broadcast / movie were so VERY cleverly introduced/executed.

And I'm starting to accept that "the luck of the Irish" isn't all its been cracked up to be.

And Gillian - Image . . . Image . . . Image - that woman is sex on a stick (I'm talking the blonde not the red in case anyone's not sure - but each to their own :) )

Just finished S01E06 (pretty good - but not as good as E05), along with E07 (which was mostly back-story).

They are apparently only 100 pages into a 400+ page book, so guess they are in this for the long-haul.

1 more week to go to end of season.

The show is not following the book closely at all, and is expanding/riffing on concepts in it liberally.

Well - that's that for this season. Just watched S01E08.

Pulled a few things together, but left on a cliffhanger (sort of) as they know season 2 is greenlit.

I'll carry on watching for sure.

Well - I'm totally hooked on the series ! But then - Ian Shane could star in a video about flushing a toilet and I'd be hooked. Gotta love that dry delivery of his !!! Like all good SciFi and Fantasy - the underlying themes are what makes the genre so perfect for social commentary !

If you haven't read the book, you're gonna love the scenery that McShane gets to chew on towards the end of the series.

I read the book many years ago but do not remember much beyond the basic premise. I remember Anansi being far more involved than he has been so far.

I found it annoying that knowing they only had 8 episodes they chose to spend 2 of them filling out the backstories of 2 side characters. Both stories could have been done in 10-15 minutes (or cut entirely). When I mentioned this to a friend he questioned whether Emily Browning was dating the director/producer/writer/whatever to get more screen time.

At the rate they're going, they intend to stretch the book for 2, probably 3, seasons. I actually like the extra stuff, and reading an interview with Gaiman I gather he does as well. I thought the new Vulcan side-trip was awesome. It wasn't in the book, but it fit in perfectly and underscores how spot on Gaiman's observations about religion in America were/are. In the book, Laura was more a deus ex machina to move the plot forward rather than a fleshed out character, so I appreciate what the show runners have done with her as well.
