Estate Auction of John Petik

#1 Post by Nalissa2 »

Hello everyone.

As most of you know, our brother in the GK hobby and co-moderator John Petik unexpectedly passed away just before Thanksgiving Day last year.

For those of you who are new here, he was a staple of this hobby. Supportive and encouraging. He genuinely loved being part of it and supported it
every way he could.

We miss you John and hope you know we always will.

His family set up an auction featuring many of his kits -- built and unbuilt -- to be offered to people who were like minded and would appreciate and opportunity to own them.

Please note that The Clubhouse does not benefit in anyway from this sale. I'm just posting this here as a courtesy to his memory and at the request of his friends and family.

Just a heads up. Anyone who may be interested, you will have to sign up at ProxyBid.
Also, pay attention to the descriptions.
Some of the pieces they have noted as pick-up only.
No shipping.

Descriptions are kind of vague on some. But considering the auction company isn't really immersed in our hobby, I am surprised at how good a job they have done overall.

They were set up at Wonderfest on Saturday. I had a chance to talk to one of them at length several times while outside smoking.
They now have 3 of the 5 auction groups up that they plan to run.
https://www.proxibid.com/aspr/MATTHEW-B ... ?ahid=4235

2 for kits, one of which is mostly his build ups. One for comic books.
4th is supposed to be his movie stuff.
And the 5th is supposed to be his rock memorabilia and music related items.

I know I am hoping to keep some of John's pieces 'in the family' so to speak.

Some really nice stuff. The pick up could be a killer but a great collection

Someone might want to mention to proxybid to send out a E-mail on this.
I'm a long time member of the auction site and get 4 to 5 auction emails a day and I have not gotten a single one on these items.

Hard sell when buyers don't know about it!

This Ghost Rider bust is the very first bust I put out under Brothers in Resin B.I.R. back in 2006.

Would love to get a hold of this piece and keep it to remember John by. Any info on when this will be up for Auction thanks.

I never heard of that auction site ? there are far too many popping up..
not say this is bad auction site.. truthfully his family used a ebay valet or I soldit .com
This auction company is rather obscure..
Sadly I don't see much his collection selling because of unknown site?
and lack of communication..

Going through John's auction, I was left with a profound sense of sadness. This was obviously something he was very passionate about - a huge body of personal work and subjects he truly cared about. In the end it was just plastic - the faintest and most hollow of echoes reminding us of who John was and the things that brought him joy. It reaffirmed for me a lesson I learned in my divorce. It's just stuff, and it doesn't matter. I don't collect anymore. When I buy something (which is rare these days) it's because I want to enjoy the process of building and painting it. If I like looking at it sitting on a shelf in my office - fine, but life's too short to get hung up on collecting for its own sake. My $0.02.

Auctions start to close on the 18th.
There is a 18% buyer fee or vig as we call it around here.
That means you are going to pay 18% over cost before shipping.
A 100 piece will be 118.00 a 1000.00 dollar piece is 1180.00 + shipping.

Something to be aware of with proxybid.
You can pretty much count on a 100.00 piece costing 150.00 TYD after all is said and done.

NOW with that said this auction has been running since May 27th and will start to close out on June 18th.

For those that have never bought from them be prepared, this site has world attention live and proxy bids.
However John's stuff is on line only bidding. So that cuts out the phone and live bids.

One other thing, you need a credit card on file with them to bid so if you're serious about a piece and want/need it get a account setup well ahead of time

Thanks for posting the details Susan & Trevor.

I couldn't help sighing over-and-over as I browsed through the kits. Memories of things he'd said or posts he'd made kept flooding back.

John - I really MISS you round these parts Bro

I'm so sad to hear this news. John helped me a lot with some international order, even though i'm not really an active member. He was always helpful and replied to any of my questions.

I will miss him :(

and once again Scuzzfink manages to exploit the negative, in his usual snide manner
in a post aimed at helping the family of
a sadly lost much missed colleague and friend.

John was nice guy, I 'm saying the auction site is not known..
His build ups are great.. I'm not fan of auction sites like this one
Anyways I hope all goes well with collection..
It would been nice if we as members were notified about his estate early..

As to why this auction company, probably because it is local to the Chicago area, and fairly reputable. They have been in business for over 20 years. (yes, I checked them out before I approved posting about this)
scuzzfink85 wrote: It would been nice if we as members were notified about his estate early..
This thread is the notification, well before the first auctions close.
This is how the family chose to liquidate John's collections.
Honestly, it is probably the best way for them.
I've been on the other side when my mother passed a couple years ago. Long hours spent sorting through everything, pricing items, laying them all out, and dealing with the vultures waiting in a line around the block an hour before the estate sale started.
And that was just for normal household goods. I would have loved if there had been enough value to hire an auction company to deal with it all. Would have been worth the percentage they get to not have to deal with it all.

They aren't going to get top dollar this way, but it will be done and over with for them.
Sometimes that is worth more than money when it comes to dealing with the passing of a loved one.

Hey Bro' - I went through every single item and don't remember seeing that - unless it's the one below?

I suspect not EVERYTHING (kit-wise) is there as there was at-least ONE other piece of his not listed (unless he sold/traded it during the last couple of years).

I am sure some of the family kept pieces for themselves also.
Or they could turn up in one of the upcoming lots that haven't been listed yet.

Thanx spike but not the one. It was a conversion from the 1st series in this link. Horizon.

I've forgotten I used to monitor a few of these categories. It was one of his earliest submissions so I probably reported it as a dead link. :(

This is the thread where he mentions selling it and the MM link to it was dead: http://theclubhouse1.net/phpBB3/viewtop ... hilit=hulk
This is one good reason the new Gallery MUST continue. No dead links. Pics & INFORMATION. History must be preserved someplace. Volunteers always welcome to assist.

related to the auction site... couldn't find the answer to this question there: what do they mean by Internet Premium 18% ? Is this a tax of some kind?

I believe they tack on 18% of your winning bid to pay the Auction House.
