Help: How do I build a 1/6 scale countryside fence and bush?

#1 Post by sktch4fn »

HI guys!

I want to build a base for my Alien and I thought about a countryside road with some grass, bushes and a wooden fence. I figured out the road part but not sure how to approach the fence. Any ideas?

If you have an idea for a base, please let me know.

Thank you

E.

I'd buy some basswood or balsa strips in about the right size, then do a bit of carving to make them more irregular; cut them and build a fence just like you'd do a real one; stain with dark brown or paint.

Actually, if it's just the one figure, it'd be a fairly small base, and you could probably get by with just one post and some broken strands of barbed wire. Pre-made barbed wire is available from several sources.

That sounds good! I remember seeing an article of how to sculpt a wood fence but I can't remember where. I thought about a piece of asphalt, some water puddles and grass with a fence on it.... BUt I want that feeling of something just happened...maybe a few footprints, or something broken that the alien just did. It is a Saucer Men from Menagerie....

As Rocketeer said, the basswood strips is on the money for side strips. For the uprights you could do thicker strips or get some dowels. For a rustic fence I would take to them with some sort of knife or dremel and just hack away.

If the fence has been there a while and not maintained, I would substitute the brown wash for a gray paint and then a lighter gray dry brush to bring out the "hacked" up part.

For a beaten up roadway I would pour out a thin layer of Hydrocal or Plaster of Paris, and then after it's dry, break it into chunks. Then put the chunks back together on your dio base. Sand representling pebbles and bits of grass flock can stick out of the gaps in the road.

For puddles there are tons of products out there that you can fill holes and grooves with. HTH and I'd like to see how it goes. :D

Hmmm...The "something just happened" is intriguing. That seems to be where the story is coming from and going, so maybe organize around that. I look forward to seeing the finished piece! :D
