Shading etc using oil paints

#1 Post by RudeDogg1 »

Does anyone know of a good guide to using oils for shading and blending etc on acrylics?

If you already have the oils, well that's that. But IMHO they're really not necessary anymore. Using thin glazes of acrylics, do just a good a job, and they don't take "forever" to dry.
Ian, on You Tube, gives an excellent tutorial - https://youtu.be/JK8bw98Sn9E

Good tutorial but I don't think the process or the results are quite the same as using oil paints. A better example of someone mimicking oil paints with acrylics is the way Kiril paints - see his tutorial on Miniature Mentors - blending colours with a stippling technique.

You can blend acrylics but it's hard to achieve quite the same depth. I'm still determined to learn more about oils but I do know that they needn't take a long time to dry if you use the right mediums or alkyd paints

Golden Acrylics makes a ton of different premixed glazes that work great for kits. I have used them on one off projects as well as production painting. Cuts my time down, no mixing, consistent color with no variation makes it a great off the shelf product IMHO.
