Best sandpaper/grit for resin?

What is the best grit of sandpaper for resin and should it be wet sandpaper or regular?

I guess it depends on what you need it for. I've never used wet sandpaper - I usually buy a mix of sandpaper grades, and try them carefully, til I get it to work they way I want. It might also depend on the kind of resin you're working with, so I would proceed carefully ...

Resin is no different from plastic in this respect: use heavier grits for major stock removal and progressively lighter grits to cover up the scratches left from heavier grits.

That said, usually my processing of kits involves fairly little overall sanding. I try to remove any flashing with sanding stick. I used to use a knife blade for that but I get better results with 4 grits of sanding stick (all on one stick.)

One time I might use a sanding block is when I'm flattening the base of a part to get better adhesion to another part, or to prevent rocking on an uneveven surfaace. Then I typicaally use 400-600 grit wet paper. Wet sanding keeps the resin dust down. You don't want to be breathing sanding dust.

You'll find you will need'm ALL. There is no such thing as a single grit! Just Make sure you go from course to ending with fine. Wet/dry (used wet) clogs a lot less than dry. Once you start using the different grits you'll figure it out.

That's a nice concise explanation! I have a stack of papers; wet, dry, starting at very coarse (almost never used) up to 800-1000. Then I also have a set of wet/dry cloths.

I use the 3M sanding pads - Fine, Extra Fine, and Ultra Fine. They work both wet or dry. 99% of the time I use these pads.
Once in a while I use a coarse emery board, whatever you call them. If I really want to dig into the kit, I use a flat topped dremel bit.

I mostly do girl kits, and I attempt to achieve smooth, flawless skin. I use a variety of sand paper grits (150, 220, 320, 400 & higher) and various tools. I usually finish up with the sanding pads advocated by Kev. They work great and help avoid creating flat spots on the arms and legs of the figure.

Aside from tweaking smalls pieces with sanding sticks, I use 240 for material removal then 400 and 600 to finish the surface. Using wet will give you a better surface, less mess and require less effort.
