Completed over vacation. I had insufficient paints (there was no primer or matte sealant to be had on the island, and you can't take those things on the plane) so the colors are a bit weaker than what I would have managed to do at home. I tried a regular acrylic gray as a "primer substitute". A minor disaster. It made the models sticky. I do NOT recommend it. Also had to cut the final oil washes with paint thinner instead of Mineral Spirits. Another inadequate substitute. Oh well.
I reposed Kong's arms (and cut and patched both the long and short arms into a mid-length version). Photos taken in a setting to resemble the Mount Fuji set in the movie. Let me know what you think.
*FLASH UPDATE* Five years later, I have finally built a base for these two puppies. I was also planning on doing some long overdue oil washes and matte sealant spray while on vacation here at the Croatia Summer house, but it appears that Amazon.de (over which I ordered the mineral spirits and Krylon matte spray I need to that) has failed me - more accurately, the EU Postal system appears to have lost both items.
So - that likely remains for next year and better luck with the postal service. For now, here's a couple of pics of the base:
