WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE PEGASUS MARTIAN

While the Martian War Machine from George Pal's 1953 The War of the Worlds is a classic alien vehicle with many model renderings over the years the Martian itself, seen only fleetingly in the film, is much less well known.

Over the years there have been a number of kits, mostly garage, of it. In recent years, with its focus on WoW kits, Pegasus Models produced both a vinyl kit and pre-paint statue of it. However, while the Pegasus kit was based on blueprints from the film's production it appears this was the design for a practical suit rather than the production's concept for the Martian as a being.

The Martian is encountered in the scene in the ruined farmhouse where it lays a suckered hand on the character Sylvia's shoulder. Forester confronts the creature and throws debris at it, injuring it. The Martian then makes off at considerable speed. Inside the rather makeshift suit was a kneeling Charles Gemora. During filming he almost fell out of the back of the suit when one of the workers pulled the platform too fast. If you look closely at the scene, you can see the Martian is tipping over slightly.

A still from the scene showing the
Martian moving rapidly backwards.

It is very unlikely this design (and upon which the Pegasus kit is based) could produce the speed at which the creature is shown to move in the movie. It suggests the filmmakers envisioned a legged creature. In addition, when Clayton Forrester is briefing his science colleagues they discuss how "isn't it curious how everything about them seems to be in threes? ": eyes, fingers on the hands, battle groups etc.) It seems unlikely this did not also include how many legs the Martians had. Steven Spielberg obviously believed this to be the case when he made his aliens tripods for the 2005 version of War of the Worlds which was a partial homage to the 1953 film.

That the Martian was to be legged is confirmed by research: "The bottom-half of the creature is never fully shown but blueprints show three legs having each a single suction-cup toe, similar to those on their fingers; other art shows two legs." [Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martian_( ... he_Worlds)]. The technology of the day, and the budget restricted the filmmakers in what they could do. The same restrictions played their role in the depiction of the war machines which Pal wanted to be walking tripods like in Wells' novel.

It is true the filmmakers made no attempt to represent the creature as taller than the suit they had built so that the Martians had very long arms as it reached up to Sylvia's shoulder and when they turned around they both looked down upon the creature. Filmgoers of the time were less picky than we are today and its probable the filmmakers didn't think viewers would notice or question the logic of such a short creature being able to move as quickly as it did. Basing its model then on the set suit has resulted in a model by Pegasus, as it did for Alchemy Works and Blackheart, of a creature with a mollusk-like single foot. This suggests their Martian, asked to move as quickly as in the film, must be akin to a racing snail.
